David Harriman, in THE JOURNALS OF AYN RAND, quotes Rand from a tv interview in 1961, but he does not source the interview, as far as I can tell, and I don't think it's in OBJECTIVELY SPEAKING. It appears in her notes for TO LORNE DIETERLING. A wiki search mentions it, but doesn't source it, only says the following:

Rand, Ayn. Journals of Ayn Rand, edited by David Harriman. (1997) Dutton. ISBN 0-525-94370-6 p.704 Harriman quotes from a 1961 interview in which Rand says, "Atlas Shrugged was the climax and completion of the goal I had set for myself at the age of nine. It expressed everything that I wanted of fiction writing."

Does anyone know where this was from?

Thanks!

Hi Joe,

It is likely from Barbara Branden's biographical interview of Ayn Rand in 1961, which was tape recorded.

Joe,

I Googled for TV interviews in 1961, and the only one I found was at the University of Michigan. I watched it (AynRand.org), but it didn't have that quote in it. Stephen might be right, but that would mean it wasn't a "TV" interview. It kind of nags at me, because I could swear I've read or heard her say that, but I can't remember where.

It is not in Who Is Ayn Rand? per Google Books.

Steve, I originally said "tv interview", but now, I must have picked that up from a claim found in a google search. Harriman doesn't say it was a tv interview...

I thought it might have been the McConnell "Night and Day" interview (in OBJECTIVELY SPEAKING), as that was 1961, but it wasn't that.

Shoshana Milgram quotes it in her essay about John Galt in ESSAYS ON ATLAS SHRUGGED...in her footnote (53), she sources it as "Biographical Interviews (Ayn Rand Archives)," which makes me think Stephen's suggestion is correct.

" It kind of nags at me, because I could swear I've read or heard her say that, but I can't remember where."

Barbara Branden does discuss it in PASSION OF AYN RAND, just doesn't quote it directly, I think...
