I did not grow up watching any Marx Bros films, because they simply did not seem to be around on TV in NZ.
I have tried to subsequently watch one or two of the films, including a "night at the opera", but I just don't find them funny at all.
If I had seen any of their movies at about the age of ten, I probably would have liked them, and may indeed be nostalgic about them as an adult. That is the only explanation I can come up with for why many Americans seem to treasure these films.
Incidentally, when I have heard excerpts of just "Graucho Marx" speaking on his own, I do find him to be quite witty and talented. But as a complete Marx Bros package it does not do anything for me, especially the slapstick humour just leaves me cold.

"With the possible exception of Monty Python's The Meaning of Life, I consider this the funniest movie that I've ever seen"

ug. you pick runner up movies!

monty python's best was the holy grail, and the marx bros. best was duck soup (or maybe animal crackers).

i wasn't all that impressed with a night at the opera.
