| | A bit more detail here.
The first 4 episodes are from 4 stories in "Midshipman Hornblower". Its premiere on A&E in 1999 was a phenomenon, and the series won the Emmy for Best Mini Series that year. The next 2 episodes premiered in 2001 are from "Lieutenant Hornblower". Last year two more episodes were shown that are from "Hornblower and Hotspur". I only came upon the series at the beginning of 2003, and was immediately hooked. The casting of the dashing Welshcake, sorry, Welsh actor Ioan Gruffudd as young Hornblower is a stroke of genius. OK, I won't write more about the series lest I'll be reduced to a gushing puddle...
Also, the series have been shown in UK, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and some European countries. The DVDs are available in both formats.
A note to John: if you've already read the books, be prepared that the TV producers have made some substantial changes that have put off more than a few diehard Forester fans. I watched the TV series first and have since read all Hornblower books. In my opinion, the TV series captured the spirit of the Hornblower stories. Overall, it is a superb production.
