Oh what a great news!! Congratulations Adam! I have not had such moment myself yet and perhaps can't fully imagine your joy and pride, but I probably won't be too far off if I say that you must be more excited than Emily?! And at 19, the whole world is there in front of her. Is she geared toward academia?

Thanks for sharing!

Hong

Thank you, Hong. Emily has not made up her mind about what she will do next. Being 3 years younger than most graduates means that she has plenty of time....

Congratulations to her!
As is traditional in my culture, I treat young people between 13 and 18 as adults in training, responsible for their own decisions and lives.
This is marvelous approach.

Congratulations to you and to Emily! "You must be very proud of her. I also think Old English is very interesting. I dabbled in it just a bit in college. What fun! I would definitely love to hear about your experiences on the parenting board.

[Marcus Bachler:] Congratulations to her!

[Adam Reed:] As is traditional in my culture, I treat young people between 13 and 18 as adults in training, responsible for their own decisions and lives.

[Marcus Bachler:]  This is marvelous approach.

That (Adam's attitude with young adults) is 100% Jewish. After the ceremony of Bar/Bat Mitzvah, a boy/girl enters adulthood. Boys at the age 13, while girls at the age 12.

In Judaism, adolescence is considered a mistaken institution, a period of auto-indulgence that promotes bad habits in that sensible period of life, and that in some individuals is prolonged the whole life...

No freedom without responsibility in Judaism.

Congratulations to you and your step-daughter, Adam.

Best wishes,

Joel Català

Adam, just out of curiosity, is your step-daughter an Objectivist?

Pete,

In the strict sense of "IS," only Ayn Rand was an Objectivist, and only from about 1940 to about 1970.

In a looser sense, Emily's personal philosophy is about as close to Ayn Rand's as her father's was, or mine is.

Emily did spend some of her teenage years claiming to be a Wiccan. But then, no real teenager ever passes through those years without in some way pulling her grownups' leg. Stay sane, and they eventually snap out of it.

Adam, please pass on my heartfelt congratulations to Emily for this achievement. I just finished college this year and look like a sauntering turtle next to her! I wish her all the best in the years to come. (Why isn't Emily on SOLO?!)

Andrew,

I'll pass your congratulations onward. As for SOLO: it is as good as an electronic forum can be, but nothing like the intellectual cauldron of a first-rate academic center. Back when I was Emily's current age and a student at MIT, I spent my days talking with Marvin Minsky and Noam Chomsky and Edwin Land and Seymour Papert and Robert Efron and Jerome Letvin and Wayne Wickelgren, and nights talking with my fellow students: Ron Merrill, Harry Binswanger, Durk Pearson... I have no knowledge of Emily's reasons, but in her place I probably would not be inclined to switch from in-person interactions to any electronic meeting place, including this one.
