| | For decades there's been (at least as of a few years ago) a photograph of probably the same thing on the wall of a hallway at MIT (perhaps 1st floor, math, near SE corner of quad). I recall its having been identified as a navigational computer -- which apparently isn't inaccurate, if the device calculates the position of major heavenly bodies.
It's interesting that there's about the same time gap between Archimedes and this device, as between Newton and Babbage.
