So, we have a US Destroyer babysitting, unpaid, a Somali-pirate-held ship carrying weapons of war to Sudan where they will be used by jihadists against there own people.

Why don't we blow this ship out of the water?

Russian tanks would be sunk, Somali pirates dead, Sudan without its arms - sounds like a win-win-win situation to me. And good firing practice.

Ted,

That picture just shows some of employees of one of the clan-based protective services in today's Somalia - which is one of the few areas advanced enough to be practicing anarchy. I'm sure this dispute will be resolved soon by some form of non-government negotiation, don't you think.

I don't understand why it would be hard to take the ship back from that rag-tag little army. I bet when the Russian Navy gets there they waste little time killing pirates.

My first inclination is to give them their wish "to the death". They more than deserve it. My only sticking point is that the article suggests the crewmen are still aboard as hostages.

In past incidents, if taking the whole ship, the crew are often just killed. These pirates do not care. Nevertheless, were I a crewman, I would be hoping first for some successful negotiation, and second a damned efficient and professional commando raid.

A raid is probably inevitable, in which case I hope they hit them hard, fast, and that all the pirates 'resist' to their last man.

I am surprised they are not putting more weaponry on some ships.  A small, 20mm anti-aircraft cannon would probably take care of most of these guys, and they should be easy to get.  Any old ww2 vintage artillery piece would do just fine.  Stick one up there, get some basic training on using it, make sure you have some ammo, and bye bye pirate boat that gets too close.

Some of the ships that regularly pass through the straits south of Indonesia - pirate waters - have electrified fencing material around the ship. The various navies in the area have just recently started to work on the pirate problem that has been going on there for hundreds of years.
