When Medicare pays for a single $700,000 surgery for a single senior citizen with one foot already in the grave, I can see why the program is going B-R-O-K-E!

It's just mind-boggling that still, despite all of the failed attempts in the past, despite the fact that it is economic LAW that price controls result in shortages, that people STILL want to try price controls.

This bears a strong resemblance to the rowdies from Animal House asking Dean Wormer for just "one more chance" to succeed.

As I recall law prohibits a doctor saying anything about cost of a treatment to a Medicare patient. I tried to verify that using Google, but you can imagine the numerous hits for {Medicare, doctor, cost, advise, end of life, law} that didn't hit the target.

On the other hand, proposals to change Medicare to not pay for expensive treatments that do little to help the patient (or worse) are met with retorts of "death panels!" by opponents.

All the more reason to "reform" all government involvement out of health care completely -- including tax breaks that create perverse incentives and needless dependence upon particular kinds of employers.

The problem with assessing end of life medical expenses is that you don't always know before you're spending the money on someone that their life is about to end. It's a problem of selective observation. There are plenty of instances of very expensive medical treatments that end up extending life. Obviously as everyone else here agrees I don't think we should have socialized medicine, but we shouldn't fixate on the costs of end of life medical expenses per se.
