| | Excellent column.
My only disagreement was with the statement that we should not raise the debt ceiling because of the trouble it would cause. ("... refusing to raise the limit would create more problems than it would solve."
We take in between 200 and 250 billion dollars a month in taxes even in this deep recession. That is far more than we need to be able to pay all interest on the debt, military payroll, social security and medicare... at least for a while.
Then we could start making cuts - restructuring the entitlements, eliminated unneeded and unconstitutional departments, laying off government workers, etc.
What possible argument could anyone have with starting to live within our means when the alternative is to continue the insanity of borrowing 40 cents of every dollar we turn around and spend? When the deficit is going up faster we can pay it down, and the debt is already at 14.6 trillion dollars, and our currency itself is in grave danger, why would anyone NOT want to say, "No more"?
