To speak out or demonstrate against him might have landed you in prison, so it was difficult to measure his actual level of support. I'm sure there is support for Chavez, but that it, like Castro, would be hard to measure accurately. Both Castro and Chavez have fairly tight control of the media.
This whole business of socialist strongmen is a problem with education - only the ignorant and the corrupt would support them. And this problem is magnified in countries that have a large peasant population.
