After watching the video (which also had some nifty post WWII history), I came to see the EU as a new kind of totalitarian state. Instead of a ruler - like a monarch, or military junta, or dictator - there is a collection of inter-connected committees and thousands and thousands of bureaucrats. The EU keeps a pretense of representation by having members elected to the EU parliment, but then you learn that the parliment can't create or modify any of the laws or regulations. It is out there just for show. The elite who rule Europe have adopted the democratic socialist's concept of gradualism - acquiring power year by year and regulation by regulation instead of all at once. They are doing what the socialists have always wanted to do - they rule at a very detailed level with hundreds or thousands of regulations on every tiny thing and can't be voted out of power. It is a new kind of totalitarianism, it is the heart of socialism but stripped of the need to adhere to Marxist theology (unless a particular issue helps them), it is gradualism so that it doesn't need a revolution, and it is globalism in action. It is such a new, totally kind of government that it gets mistaken as something other than a government. The member nations think they are in charge of their countries, but the gradualism is leeching their real power year by year away from them and off to Brussels, till, in the end those member nation governments are just figure-heads. Very worth watching from this perspective.
