I recently had an argument with a friend over the nature of the political spectrum. It wasn't a serious topic by nature: we weren't discussing which politics were best, only the differences between liberalism, conservatism, libertarianism, and totalitarianism. The argument ended abruptly due to forces outside our control, and I brought it up again in an email, in which I clearly laid out my views. He responded with:

"I got through half of this email and, after i began to type a responce
remembered that I dont care anymore. I believe with all of my mind that my
beliefs are correct. Much in the way that I believe that my religion is
correct. I won't force them upon you nor would I like for you to force them
upon me."

That was his word-for-word response.
How does one fight something like this? I realize he has a right to his opinion, but let's face it, Objectivism won't get past the front door if this is the mindset of most people. How can anyone wage a war for men's minds when those minds have already closed off to any differing opinion, or reality for that matter? Have any of you ever come into contact with people like this?

Well a 2x4 applied vigorously can be quite usefull :-). Seriously, I know it is frustrating trying to debate an issue with someone who will not consider your arguments but there is no point in wasting your time and energy with such people, concentrate on people who will consider your arguments.

Well, I think that there are two things to keep in mind. One is that we have very limited resources and a practically unlimited number of people that we need to convince, so figuring out who to try to convince is almost as important as figuring out the best way of convincing them. This guy definitely sounds like a poor prospect.

The second thing to keep in mind is that often people will be initially stubborn and refuse to concede any points, but talk to them in a few months and they may have thought about some of the things you've said and be more open at that later date. I've personally seen this happen on more than one occasion.

Hi Mark, Jeff.

Mark: Way ahead of you buddy; on a different note, any suggestions on where I could hide a corpse?

Jeff: The old "let it sink in for a while." You know, that actually happened to me with Atlas Shrugged. New ideas are hard to take in all at once. However, what we were discussing wasn't even Objectivism, or even close to a radical idea. Go figure.
