Commentary - Humor

One of the unique characteristic of the human rational nature are the emotional expressions which are mostly involuntary. "Man is the only creature that blushes, or needs to," Mark Twain said. Man is also the only creature that smiles, frowns, laughs, and weeps. He is also the only creature that worries, hopes, hates, or experiences nostalgia, guilt, (its cousin, regret), and pride. These latter emotions, however, do not have any particular expression associated with them, as do humor (smiling and laughter), pathos (weeping), and shame (blushing).

While some animals, like primates and dogs, do seem to exhibit behavior indicating some emotional reactions we share, like fear, enthusiasm, and joy, all other emotional experiences are uniquely possible to man because he has a rational nature. The animals do not worry or hope, because they are unable to conceive of the future. They do not experience nostalgia or regret, because they cannot conceive of the past. They do not experience guilt, shame or pride because they have no concept of values. The irrational creatures neither laugh or weep because concepts of humor and sadness are impossible to them.

Of all the human emotions and their expressions, probably the least well understood is our sense of humor. Why do we laugh? It is more or less obvious why we cry or blush, worry, and feel guilty, but why some things strike us "funny" and frequently evoke an involuntary smile or laugh is not at all obvious.

It is not only difficult to explain why some things seem, "funny," but even to explain what we mean by funny. Why should there be such an emotion at all? What purpose does humor serve?
 
Emotions

The nature of humor cannot be understood except in the context of human nature itself. Everything about human nature, "fits," the kind of beings we are, and the essence of human nature is volition, which enables and requires reason and knowledge. The question is, what part of that rational/volitional nature does humor fit?

Since humor is one of the emotions, it must serve whatever purpose any of the emotions serve. But, what are the emotions?
The emotions are our perception of the body's physiological reactions to the content of consciousness. At every moment we are conscious, there is a continuous and complex set of physiological, neurological, and chemical reactions to whatever we are currently conscious of. It is those physiological reactions that we are directly conscious of we call our emotions.

While both what we are perceiving and what we are thinking effect the emotions, it is what we think that is the most important, and in most cases, even determines what emotional reaction we will have to what we perceive. For example, if someone sees a snake, and happens to be someone who thinks snakes are slimy and dangerous, their emotional reaction will be one of fear and revulsion, but if they think snakes are interesting and sometimes beautiful in their movements and markings, there emotional reaction might only be a mild sense of curiosity and interest, or even pleasure.

The emotions are involuntary. We can learn, however, what thoughts produce which emotions and can learn to control our emotions by the way we think. Generally, if one is otherwise healthy, our emotions correctly reflect the nature of our thoughts, values, and choices, and most attempts to "control" the emotions are really attempts to "hide" or avoid them, and this is usually a mistake. The emotions have a very important function in human nature.

The unique characteristic of human consciousness we call volition, the necessity and ability to live and act by conscious choice, is the essence of life itself, for human beings. The whole of human life is a continuous process of thinking and choosing and evaluating what one is conscious of, not just externally, but of our thoughts and judgements as well. The one thing we cannot be conscious of is consciousness itself. The one thing we cannot directly experience is that continuous process of thinking, judging, and choosing -- or at least would not be able to, if it were not for the emotions.

The emotions provide a direct perceptual experience of the content of consciousness. While we are conscious of our thoughts intellectually, at the conceptual level of consciousness, the emotions provide a direct visceral experience corresponding to that consciousness. Making plans for something good are accompanied by feelings of enthusiasm and anticipation; thinking or contemplating doing or having done something wrong will be accompanied by feelings of guilt, thinking about someone we admire, desire, and value very highly are accompanied by feelings of love and affection; considering something evil and ugly are accompanied by feelings of revulsion and anger.

In our actual experience, we do not usually distinguish between our thoughts and their accompanying feelings and experience them as units. The feelings and the thoughts are integrated into objects of consciousness which turn abstract thoughts into concretes which are directly perceived.

Our emotions, as an automatic reaction to our immediate consciousness, are also like a running gage or evaluation of that which one is explicitly conscious. It is the way our human consciousness enables us to directly enjoy, or viscerally experience both direct perception and our conceptual identification and evaluation of things simultaneously.

The emotions are our nature's way of converting the abstract elements of conceptual consciousness, our concepts, values, and thoughts, into "physical" experiences. The emotions make our minds, as well as our bodies, sensuous.

While the emotions are capable to providing feelings which would not usually be called "beautiful" or "pleasurable," which one usually associates with sensuousness, since it is our enjoyment of life that is its purpose, we suppose the purpose of the emotions are to enable us to enjoy our lives, not to make them miserable. When the emotions are not a source of joy, but the very opposite, it is an indication of something very wrong. The thing that is wrong can be physiological, but more frequently the thing that is wrong is the individual's view of life, their values, their thoughts, and their choices, and the thing that is wrong with them is they are contrary to reality and dominated by superstitious and unrealistic views and desires.

Turning the Conceivable Into the Perceivable

The emotions, by giving us an immediate visceral experience of our abstract conceptual consciousness, provide a kind immediate recognition of that which, without the emotions, we would not generally be aware. Many of the relationships we identify conceptually cannot be known at all by direct perception. We can directly perceive most spatial relationships between entities, as well as size relationships. We can perceive the relative difference in the weight of most smaller objects, differences in texture, temperature, and hardness, as well. But many relationships cannot be perceived at all, and without concepts, could not be known. Familial relationships, such as uncle and second cousin, cannot be perceived. Relationships that can only be known by science or history, cannot be perceived: the relationship of the chemical elements to each other, their relative components, the relationship of one component of atoms, electrons, to electricity, the relationships between heavenly bodies, and the relationship between biological functions.

When we respond emotionally to our concepts of relationships, we are directly conscious of them, just as though we could perceive them directly. When we cringe when seeing a "close-call," such as when two vehicles seem about to collide, but manage to "just miss," each other, it is almost as if we can "feel" that event that never actually happens. But that same feeling can be produced, merely by thinking about such an event.

Shock, incredulity, or even anger might arise when someone tells us the price of a particular object we are considering buying. The relationship between the object and its price could never be perceived, but when a price is exaggerated, it is that exaggerated relationship we recognize conceptually that our emotional reaction enables us to experience directly.

Elements of Humor

Humor is that emotion or set of emotions that accompany the conceptual recognition of a specific kind of relationship. The kinds of relationships that are humorous have a specific nature determined by the following elements or characteristics:

  • Values
  • Unusualness
  • Surprise
  • Perspective
  • Irony  

     
    There is irony in all humor. The list of characteristics of humor is actually upside-down, because all of the characteristics of humor expand and explain its ironic nature, which, in the end all turn on one's values.
     
    Values - while it is almost never made explicit (and doing so would in most cases destroy the humor), all humor depends on values. One's particular values determine what one will find, "funny," but more significantly, it is the fact that there are values, and therefore, things which are important and consequential that make humor possible.
     
    Unusualness - The emotions provide instantaneous and continuous perceptual evaluation of the content of consciousness. For all common and usual thoughts and percepts, the common and usual emotional responses are sufficient. The humorous is that which requires a special evaluation because the regular, expected, and commonplace do not provide an immediate evaluation or comprehension of them.
    The commonplace, the expected, the usual, and the normal are never humorous. Any of these might be either very good and benevolent or very bad and malevolent, but they are not humorous because there is nothing about them that requires any special evaluation that is not regular and apparent.
     
    Surprise - Sometimes the unexpected is humorous, just because it is unexpected, but that is not the characteristic meant here. The surprise that is meant here relates to the "unusualness" of that which is humorous. What is always unusual about that which is humorous is that the concept or concepts involved are always in some relationship that would not normally be expected.
    A humorous thing is not funny just because it is unusual in the sense that it does not happen very often, but unusual in the sense that it would not be expected to happen at all.
     
    Perspective - Humor is always a response to an unusual perspective, and that perspective is always one that is a kind of evaluation that either dismisses or cancels evil, or demonstrates unexpected benevolence.

    The most common way humor does this is by providing the perspective on something that is evil, or harmful, or dangerous, or threatening, or only annoying, that demonstrates the sense of importance such things bear is false, and that, whatever is being "laughed at," is not important at all.
    It is the emotional equivalent of the philosophical evaluation of evil itself, that evil is a negative with no power of its own, except that which it derives from the good.

    This is the key to why humor is required for our enjoyment. While we could intellectually make the same evaluation about evil, as we do philosophically, only by being able to experience the superiority of good and virtue over evil and vice, only by being directly conscious of this relationship that makes evil impotent in the face of virtue, can that evaluation be directly enjoyed. It is the immediate enjoyment of that which is possible only to man, the sense that one is adequate for living in the world, and all its threats and supposed dangers are no threat to one's ability to enjoy one's life and no danger to their success as a human being.

    Humor enables us to laugh at the world's empty threats and enjoy that sense of victory-over-evil that is human success. Irony - What we have described is irony, but a special kind of irony. Life is ironic. All value, all good, and all virtue are made possible by life. But death, loss, and grief are also made possible by life. When viewing the world as benevolent, that fact of evil in the world seems incongruous and contradictory. How can a benevolent world have so much evil in it?

    It is the philosophical fact that evil is not a positive, but in fact only an empty and powerless negative that has no power at all except that which the good makes possible to it that humor makes it possible for a human being to experience. The irony with which humor provides this good emotion is the irony that in the face of the greatest evil, even the evil itself is turned by the human spirit into a virtue to be enjoyed.
     
    Two Observations

    Humor requires a certain, "lightness," of mood. When our mood and thoughts are about very serious matters, even if the seriousness involves intense enjoyment, or any of those other kinds of seriousness, like great danger, demanding work or problem, intense emotional situations, or any situation demanding proper reverence and honor, humor is seldom invoked and usually out of place. There is always in humor that suggestion, "this is not as important as it seems," which is not the emotion proper to those cases which really are important. If nothing were really important, there would be no false importance to laugh at.

    The sole purpose of humor is human enjoyment. It provides a means of enjoying situations, ideas, relationships, and events that we could always identify intellectually as having those characteristics we call humorous, but without the emotion of humor, we could never experience them. The emotion enables us not only to identify those ridiculous, absurd, or ironic false threats and annoyances of life, but to experience pleasure in being superior to them.

     
    Human life is basically a comedy. Even its tragedies often seem comic to the spectator, and not infrequently they actually have comic touches to the victim. Happiness probably consists largely in the capacity to detect and relish them. ---H. L. Mencken

    Mencken is wrong. Human life is basically a romance; potentially, every life is an adventure and every individual a hero; success and failure are determined by the degree to which the individual succeeds or fails to fulfill their potential.
    But Mencken is right about the necessity of being able to see the humor in life. The hero must be able to laugh at every supposed tragedy, every discouraging criticism, every temporary setback and difficulty. He must know that evil is temporary and unimportant, and the worst, in the end, is only a joke, and to laugh at evil is to conquer it.

     
    Real intelligence requires both seriousness and humor. Seriousness without a sense of humor is a kind of stupidity. Humor without seriousness is the another. Politicians, educators, and religious leaders are usually subject to the first kind of stupidity. Those who take anyone in the first group seriously are afflicted with the second. Those in the first group seldom find anything funny. Those in the second group find everything funny, unless it requires them to think.

    There are many views of life, but there are two that dominate the psychology of many people. These views are seldom made explicit, but are implied by the attitude, actions, and words of those dominated by them. Generally, the two views are incompatible, and those holding one of these views do not hold the other. There are some, however, who entertain both views, with one of the other dominating at any one time, depending on who they are with or what they are doing.

    The humorless view regards all of life very seriously, almost as a continuous tragedy. In this view, all of life consists of problems and all human actions have only one purpose, to solve human problems. This is all very serious to these people, because they are certain they are the ones who are going to solve the problems, and of all the things they take seriously, the thing they take most seriously, is themselves. They are certain they, their views, and their programs are the most important things in the world. This group never laughs at anything.

    The other view is that nothing in life is really serious so long as there are serious people in charge of things. They believe those of the first view really do have all the answers. Life is good, someone is going to take care of all the problems, all we have to do is get as much as we can. This group laughs at everything, especially anyone who points out that someone has got to pay, you can't get something for nothing, and one's actions have consequences. Ha ha!

    There is another view, but is not very common. This is the view that life is neither a tragedy or a joke, but a potential, which every individual has. In this view there is no such thing as "human problems," because problems pertain only to goals, purposes, and ends, that is, to individuals capable of having goals, purposes, and ends. All problems are individual problems, and it is the individuals who are responsible for solving them. In this view, the joke is those people who think everything is serious, and the tragedy, those who think everything is a joke.

     
    The quickest way to destroy real values is to laugh at them.
     
    Kill by laughter. Laughter is an instrument of human joy. Learn to use it as a weapon of destruction. Turn it into a sneer. It's simple. Tell them to laugh at virtue. Don't let anything remain sacred in a man's soul — and his soul won't be sacred to him. Kill reverence and you've killed the hero in man

    The highest forms of humor are a kind of human triumph over evil, a declaration that the valueless, the useless, and decadent are not potentials that must be fought against, but a huge con to be exposed by pointing out their absurdity and laughing at them. Humor is the means to human triumph over evil and enjoying that triumph.

    The lowest form of humor is itself evil. It embraces the valueless by sneering at values, it promotes the useless by ridiculing the competent, it fosters decay by laughing at health. To laugh at something is to declare it ridiculous and powerless. To laugh at human values is to declare, "I have no values, and hate those that have them. To laugh at human achievement is to declare, "I achieve nothing and hate those that do."

    You can learn a lot about people by observing what makes them laugh. Laughter, except when forced or faked, is an involuntary response, and since that response is determined by one's values, it is a revelation of what one esteems (which they would never laugh at) and what they despise. Those who laugh at values, the virtuous, or greatness are involuntarily confessing their own lack of value, vice, and pettiness. The great laugh at evil, not because they minimize evil, but because they know that evil, in itself, is impotent, and that they can always triumph over it. The small giggle and sneer at any suggestion that men can succeed, achieve greatness, and be happy in this world, independently, and by their own effort.

    I hadn't given much thought to it before, but this must be what disgusts me when some of the participants here mock Stolyarov.  It's the Toohey sneer.  Thus I find it necessary to oppose the mockery, even when I am not in agreement with Stolyarov.  This explains my impulse to leap into the fray.
     
    It also explains why I find so tiresome as to loathe it the affected irony of post-modernism.   The post-modern mocks everything because for him nothing is true.  It is a humor that is lethal to every standard of objective morality.  It is this incursion of post-modernism into Objectivist thought, especially with regard to sexual morality, that I think will be the bane of the philosophy.  This threat is certainly not a product of my imagination.  Even in an Objectivist forum as accommodating as this one, every affirmation of standards in sexual morality has been met with a barrage of Toohey sneers.
     
    You've written a fine article, Regi.  I always like the ones that turn on a light for me.

    What's wrong with SOLOists mocking Stolyarov, if they think his ideas *are* ridiculous and powerless?
    And can you cite a single article on SOLOHQ that promotes casual sex?

    Mockery would be fine if his ideas were ridiculous, but you don't say that.  You are sanctioning mockery because his naysayers think his ideas are ridiculous.  Thinking doesn't make it so.

    Let's not be disingenuous.  Stolyarov's mockers have offered no serious alternative to his arguments other than the standard of consent.  (This is not to say that no one has made any serious argument against Stolyarov ideas.  I am addressing the very noisy contingent of his mockers.)  Thus, the only sexual conduct his mockers will flatly judge immoral is rape.  Stolyarov has had the temerity to argue that sexual morality entails more than consent and has promulgated from Objectivist principles a set of standards to that end.  I do not believe anyone here doubts the effort and intelligence that work required.

    However, the response from his mockers has not been to identify a different set of standards.  Their response has been scornful ridicule.  Until they counter Stolyarov with something more, why shouldn't I conclude that their mockery is targeting at the very idea of objective standards in sexual morality?

    Thought you might be interested in what Mel Brooks has to say about all this. Seems you two align quite well. In regard to his approach behind Springtime for Hitler, Mel says:
    "If you stand on a soapbox and trade rhetoric with a dictator you never win. That's what they do so well; they seduce people. But if you ridicule them, bring them down with laughter–they can't win. You show how crazy they are."

    I don't know how well known John Cleese is in US - he is big time in GB and Aus. Great acomic actor and writer. I saw him interviewed and in response to the question "Why do you say you have lost your sense of humour?", he responded, "Humour is seeing an island of the ridiculous and rotton and irrational in a sea of of rationality. The humour comes from highlighting that island, and its' boundaries. When that situation is reversed, when it is the rational as an island in a sea of irrationality, there's nothing to get humourous about !!  You can't poke fun at the rational"

    I've heard of Mr. Cleese but I am not familiar with his work.

    But that is exactly what the post-modernists, nihilist inclusivists do. They laugh and snare at anything that claims to be based on reason. I'm not sure that can properly be called humor, however; pathological would be more like it, I think.

    By the way, how come you show up as "Cassandra" in the list of posts, but as "Pamela Hewitt-Reid" on the actual threads? You have lots of names.

    I guess the thing is, John Cleese is a rationalist humourist, ie. not a post-modern snarler. Did you ever get to see Fawlty Towers in US? 
    I only have 2 names and they got mixed up here.  Pamela is my given name which I only use for formal, professional things. However, because I use my email address for professional things, I have it in that name.
    Cass is what I am known as far and wide to friends and foes, (but not Mother!!!), and Cassandra is what I have written under.  I think I'm flogging a dead horse with "Cass" here now, and had better accept being "Pamela" to posters. Who knows, it might help me get some pleasanter connotations to the name :-) 
     I dont know how the Cassandra came up here.  It's a mystery!!

    Hi Cass,

    I did not mean to imply anything about John Cleese. In fact, what I have heard about him is all positive. I do not watch television so never caught series, which was available here.

    {Note: I think television is a wonderful thing and have nothing against it. My wife and I are both avid readers, both love classical music, and neither of us has time to wade through all the tripe there is on TV to find the occasional gem that might be there, when we could be reading or writing and listening to a fine opera. I do miss some things, like Fawlty Towers, which some friends recommend very highly. I know Ilana Mercer has used Fawlty Towers for illustration in some of her libertarian writing.)

    It is the person that gives meaning to a name; you make the name Pamela a very interesting one, it seems to me.

    Hi Regi,

    Thankyou for the kind comment about my name. You are right, people do make a name, but we can't help but have past associations linked to them.  It's a funny thing isn't it, but our name means so much to us in terms of our identity, but it is given by someone else. I mean, my mother, god bless her cotton socks, wanted a genteel lady and a perfect little girl in pink and lace.  So instead of Bronwyn, (which I was supposed to get), I got a name she associated with her image.  Unfortunately for her, what she got was a scruffy tomboy who followed road tarring machines and came home covered in tar specks, and climbed and fell out of abandoned boat wrecks and came home in severely ripped dresses, and a stroppy, argumentative outspoken individual who didn't give a cuss what anyone thought about what she (I) said.  She's still trying to stuff me into twinsets and pearls!!
    I do agree about TV. It's a brilliant invention completely abused and ruined.  I never watch these days, (I think I might claim some sort of record in never having watched a single episode of The Simpsons). In Australia especially the programing is such unbelievable crap, stuffed full of trash-y screaming ads, it drives me wild whenever we have anyone here who wants to put it on. I too love reading, walking, and I work long hours which leave little time (or energy) for wasting in any way.
    The sort of Humour I love - wit, clever use of words, clever imagery in which the reader/viewer can find identity - was last on  TV about, I think the 80's, which is when Fawlty Towers dates from.  There was still some good British comedy back then, (I don't know if any UK solo-ists remember a show called "Rising Damp" for example - brilliant and very funny).  Modern so called Humour leaves me for dead - most of it on our tv either scatalogical schoolboy lavatory humour or clowns and custard pies.  If you like humour and reading combined, have you tried the novels of Terry Pratchett?  They're not everyones' cup of tea - I love them.  If you enjoy a clever, light-hearted "fun-poking" at the idiocies in the world you might enjoy them too.  The other thing is, a sort of Objectivist like philosophy creeps in now then.  They most certainly aren't post modern anyway.

    Hi Cass,

    Sounds like you had a good healthy, dirty, dangerous childhood, which is all too rare these days, now they've turned all the kids into a bunch of sissy-whimps. If anyone told us we had to wear a helmet to ride our bikes or roller-skate, we wouldn't have bothered.

    Too bad about TV, and most other media as well, but it is understandable. The insipid fare is designed to fit the requirements of the largest audience possible, so nothing demanding or subtle will be offered, and the rest of us will either be bored to tears or, as you and I have done, turn to something more fulfilling and satisfying.

    I like that kind of humor too, "wit, clever use of words, clever imagery in which the reader/viewer can find identity," but it was being lost even before the 80's, I think. Of course, there is a real subjective element to humor, like food and drink. I appreciate subtlety and satire in humor, and, like the arts, I want my humor to be a bit demanding. If its something just anybody will laugh at, I probably won't be interested.

    Lindz doesn't call me, "the old Phart," for nothing. I'll check out Terry Pratchett, who does some "juvenile" things, doesn't he. (That actually might appeal to me. In spite of Linz's characterization of me, I am a romantic child at heart.)

    Hi Regi,
    Yes, Terry Pratchett does write a lot of kids literature, but like all really good childrens' stuff, it appeals to adults too. It's really a bit above most modern-educated kids who want to play video games.  My favourites are of the childrens stuff so far are The Gnomes trilogy and one called The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents
    However he has written a series of adult novels known generally as the Discworld series. Each story stands alone, but reading them in order helps, as Pratchett really develops his imaginary world and writing depth, as he goes; this is not only interesting in itself, but helps see things in the stories in context.
    Basically he has invented a world, called the Discworld, which is a mirror to ours.  He is obviously very well read, as he incorporates so much into this world; history, old imagaries (the discworld is a flat disc, carried on the back of 4 huge elephants who themselves stand on the back of a huge turtle; he says it exists "somewhere just this side of a probability curve" !! {quantum physics})  However, I later learned that this was the ancient Hindu belief of the world.  It's like that all through, you often end up wondering what you have missed because of your own gnorance.  You can get a lot of fun "spotting" things like this too. Try and get a copy of "Guards Guards".  for starters, just to see what its like.
    There's a thread running through them that should appeal to any Objectivist sympathiser, such as the thoughts of a storys' villain trying to get a group together to overthrow the city, "It was amazing, this mystic business. You tell them a lie, and then when you don't need it any more you tell them another lie and tell them progressing along the road to wisdom. Then, instead of laughing they follow you even more, hoping that at the heart of all the lies they'll find the truth. And bit by bit they accept the unacceptable. Amazing"
