A somewhat different question: who is the greatest comic book hero that you have never heard of? My vote for that rather strange distinction would have to go to the delightful Mr. Jigsaw, the man of a thousand parts.

I had the pleasure of working with creators Ron Fortier and Gary Kato on several occasions including a couple of times on Mr. Jigsaw. Fortier and Kato are both wonderful individuals and a joy to work with. You can see more of Mr. Jigsaw here.

Another truely great comics character is Max Allan Collins and Terry Beatty's Ms. Tree.

Collins, whose work I have praised elsewhere, is, like Ayn Rand, a fan of Mickey Spillane (Mike Hammer, I, the Jury). Collins, however, is not just a fan but lists Spillane as his greatest literary influence.

Ms. Tree has often been described as a female Mike Hammer. She is as hard-boiled as they come and Collin's intelligent scripts touch on very real and often controversial topics. Ms. Tree has taken on organized crime, serial child killers, bombers of abortion clinics and many other criminal types. And she doesn't waste time waiting for the legal system to work its own often flawed version of justice. She, like Mike Hammer before her, often takes on the role of "I, the Jury" meting out justice in her own indomitable fashion. And, of course, this puts her in a contentious relationship with local law enforcement.

You can read more about Ms. Tree here and here.

While we're discussing comix, I must mention Shiris (alt. Sielis), the hot-tempered female mercenary from the fantasy graphic novel/anime series Record of Lodoss War.
I borrowed her name for my own primary professional persona.

Sam, thank you for finding the Snoopy-Woodstock telephone. Sadly, it doesn't have some of the features I need. I think there's a moral here about waiting too long to satisfy one's longings.

Do none of you have the idealism or wisdom to mention Mr. Magoo? Shame on you!

Well, if we're bringing anime/manga into this, I think the question becomes more complicated. Given that this discussion seems to be confined thus far to Western comics. :-P

Well, since we've abandoned long john superheroes, what about Asterix and Tin Tin? (The French have a superhero? HAHA! ) just kidding. Seriously, though, superheroes have been mostly not just a western phenomenon, but an American phenomenon. (SUPERHEROES in the Superman mold, that is...) Something about The American way of dealing with WW1-2 versus the European way...
For an interesting take on the phenomenon, see THE MYTH OF THE AMERICAN SUPERHERO

As a lover of 1960s music, I cannot condone Superman's nomination here. See this long-forgotten cover (if it doesn't show, go to http://www.superdickery.com/images/dick/1296_4_009.jpg and then return here; and if that doesn't work, paste the URL into your address box and press Enter):

Rodney, my vote still goes to Superman as he later reformed from his fifties musical misjudgment. :-)

I want to emphasize that I didn't mean anything against Pat Boone, but against Superman for wanting to kill what he knew to be a "great tune"! That makes him the devil to me!

(By some measures Pat Boone was bigger than Elvis. Though I am no particular fan of his, I do like a couple of his records, especially the one you can hear on this page called "Moody River." Make me feel good and give it a try.)
