I have a fantastic relationship with everyone in my family already. Except my older brother, whom I haven't spoken to in seven years. He isn't worth the effort.

I have little contact with my family.  I have no interest spoiling that small amount of contact with arguments over philosophy that will end with hurt feelings and unchanged minds.

It's a little bit crazy to say the current version of Objectivism isn't somewhat anti-social. Rand certainly didn't seem very pro-family, nor did she offer much social guidance thereof.

Okay Andre, but sheesh. I mean, how much can one woman really do??

Peter, what an ominous statement!  I feel the desire to never make you angry with me.

None of my family seems to care much, but I have a hunch my younger sister "prays" for me a great deal.

It's merely a generational thing.  The people likeliest to have made a career of knocking Rand are the ones who were already adults, set in their ways, when Objectivism came online in the late 50s.  The good news is that if you survived my teenage Randroid phase you can survive anything.

Ah, but the question is: Why does almost everyone go thru a dreadful "teenage Randroid phase?" What is the sickness at the heart of Objectivism which causes this in most people? Why do some, such as the ARIans, maintain this disease all of their lives?

Andre asked:

I would have asked the question, "... at the heart of Objectivists ... ?"

The answers are: Rationalism and Intrinsicism.

Because of the influence of religions and their "holy" texts, these dispositions already have become latently conditioned into the minds of millions.  Many who accept the truth of Objectivism zealously tend to treat Ayn Rand like a divinely inspired prophet.  This holds especially true of teenagers seeking to create their own unique identities.

I did not get exposed to Objectivism until the age of 22, so some of my teenage cockiness had already subsided.  But I still had plenty of insolence left to annoy people with my pontifications.  Thankfully, the ARI course Objectivism through Induction aims to cure this misbehavior for those seeking such a cure.

Excellent analysis, Luke. I wholeheartedly agree.

I, myself, did not "get exposed to Objectivism" until my ... [hold your breath] ... FOURTH DECADE of life! So, in my wise and emotionally-mature case, THERE WAS NO Randroid phase!

However, people who find themselves on the other end of an intense argument with me -- may find this just A LITTLE hard to believe!  ;-)  [I can get pretty mean, almost condescending, when it becomes clear that my arguments are being intellectually disrespected (as opposed to, simply, not being respected)]

Perhaps my best defense against this tarnished view of me as this tainted man -- would be a witness (or 9 of them). Witness those who met me at RoR #1, and I'll bet that they'll tell you that I'm about as relaxed and jovial as they come.
