The notebooks of Lazarus Long are included in the wonderful novel (perhaps my favorite of his) Time Enough for Love. Don't read the last paragraph of the wikipedia review, it is a spoiler.
That book was my favorite book of all time when I grew up. One of the few books I read more than once. Actually, it has been so long, I should give it another read.
Be wary of strong drink. It can make you shoot at tax collectors... and miss.
