Life is measurable. We can count things living. We can measure metabolic functions. We can time the duration of a life and call time of death when it ceases. We can parse a life into its constituent, self-sustaining acts - down to the ergs of energy needed for each beat of a heart. But only wisdom will hold a measure of the difference between living on any terms, and living only on those terms that make honor, pride and joy possible.

I noted some passages from entries in the Lexicon that are relevant:

"The Objectivist ethics holds that human good does not require human sacrifices and cannot be achieved by the sacrifice of anyone to anyone." VOS, 28.

"It is not society, nor any social right, that forbids you to kill--but the inalienable individual right of another man to live." Textbook of Americanism, 7.

"An individualist is a man who says: "I will not run anyone's life--nor let anyone run mine. I will not rule nor be ruled. I will not be a master nor a slave. I will not sacrifice myself to anyone--nor sacrifice anyone to myself." Textbook of Americanism, 6.
