Who cares?

We're in the middle of pretending to save the planet, baby."

My mother, who, other than voting and listenin to Glenn Beck is rather politically uninvolved is incensed by Cap and Trade and has been asking her friends to tell her what they understand this policy means. She fears that people will not oppose it because they do not understand it. Harsanyi's article solves that problem, he describes it in two words: energy rationing.

Levels of government evil, from the least to worst:
------------
Innocent, well-intended, but wrong: No bad intentions, just wants some minor regulations to protect the folks and doesn't realize that even a minor interference in free market activities makes more harm than it fixes. (He might say, "Some regulations are just plain helpful and cause no harm to anyone.")

Not innocent, well-intended and wrong: Knows there will be some harm from proposed regulations, but justifies it as being good net-net. (He says, "Some freedom is lost for a few, but it is minor and everyone is benefited overall.")

Not innocent or well-intended - a small time chisler: Willing to cause at least a small amount of harm inorder to acquire some small personal benefits - e.g., creates earmarks that turn into kick-backs. Knows that some people are being harmed and that it is to feather his own nest. (He says, " Sure, I'm screwing some groups, just a little, but it gets me the campaign funds and prestige I need in congress.")

Will cause serious harm for large personal benifit: Inserts himself into a situation in a major way - even though it causes serious harm and even destroys some people. Done for big bucks and/or serious power. (He says to himself, "Screw them. It's dog eat dog and I'm going to be the one doing the eating.")

Obsessed with taking away freedom in whole areas for their cause: Makes significant changes for the purpose of destroying freedom itself in an important area. Done to create a system of power that will last and believes that the new system will be better for the people and they shouldn't have freedom in that entire area. (He says to himself, "No crisis should be wasted, when it can be used to get control over the economy.")

Destruction to satisfy a hatred for the good: Makes significant changes for the purpose of destroying the good - both the freedom and the capacity to progress and to enjoy. (He says to himself, "I hate those fuckers and they deserve to have everything taken from them.")
-----------

Motivations vary from person to person, but there have to be many of the people who are without doubt that the Cap and Trade should pass that fit the last category - as a law, that is what it best fits - destruction under the guise of regulation. Energy is to the economy what the life force is to the human. Rationing energy is like choking a person, slowly.

Jim, this is just my impression, given in the absence of any real evidence: His narcissism works as his primary drive, and that holds him obsessed, and Messiah-like - on a crusade.
