Does anybody out there remember the ERA?  Didn't think so.  The parallels are remarkable just the same.  It started out looking like an invincible winner whose promoters noisily anticipated gay marriage, hiring quotas, federally-ordained pay scales and, for all one knew, unisex restrooms and arrests for people who used the wrong personal pronouns, all written into the constitution.

Then people started asking how the amendment would actually work in practice.  Gay marriage?  Hiring quotas?  Federally-ordained pay scales?  All of this written into the constitution?  The promoters fought back by denying everything and calling their opponents stupid liars in thrall to the right-wing conspiracy.  They brought in such eminent constitutional scholars as Alan Alda to prove their point.

In the end, the promoters' dishonesty and bad will turned an invincible winner into a loser.

Let us all hope these dishonest promoters will lose this battle.

Certainly, the more that we write (clear, factual) letters to the editor, letters to congress, participate in local 'town meetings' and such, the better off we'll be. If I had the money for it, I'd buy advertising, myself.
