Explaining disparities is really important. It's how we know things. So, the follow-up multiple-choice question then is:

Why are we 20 times more productive than everyone else alive -- or anyone who has ever lived?

a) Because we are 20 times smarter than anyone who has ever lived
b) Because we are 20 times luckier than anyone who has ever lived
c) Because we are 20 times more predatory (20 times more ruthless) than anyone who has ever lived
d) Because we are God's "chosen few"
e) Because of a rule of law founded on inalienable invidividual rights (including property rights)

Because most of the people most passionate about being productive, making opportunity for self, and not wanting to lose the products of their labor to their originating government moved here. They left the looters behind. Is that A and E, with a combo of the negative effect that other countries went the opposite direction of E?

Sam,

You get a gold star (not an actual gold star, just one of them stickers emulating a gold star).

:-)

Dean,

You bring up a good point -- even if we were only 1% smarter (in writing a rights-resepecting Constitution, or whatever), folks would flock here and, over some extended period of time, we would become (and may have already become) 20% smarter than all of the rest of the world. But it still doesn't detract from the original reason, the reason that brought the smart ones over here in the first place -- the original respect for rights.

So yes, we're smarter now (except for our socialists), but that doesn't explain the disparity in production of new wealth -- but law derived from individual rights does.
