If you take corporations as being exemplars of capitalism then the underlying message here is that capitalism fosters mindlessness, lack of sovereignty, futility, and disassociation. The unspoken message is that some kind of anti-capitalism (some kind of collectivism) is required from mindfulness, sovereignty, feeling potent, and associating well with one's peers. Only if this oppositional alternative to capitalism is in place, only then, will we be fully human and fully happy (or fully capable of being happy). If capitalism is allowed to exist unchecked, mankind suffers.

This is the false foundation on which Michael Moore tries to build -- in order to line his pockets with cold, hard cash (from movie ticket sales, etc). Michael Moore goes out of his way to characterize libertarian people as knuckle-dragging mouth-breathers, mindlessly chasing profits while leaving a trail of bloody bodies in their wake.

Chomsky has a very loyal following on Wikipedia. I did a quick search of the Talk page archives and saw them justifying, again and again, the removal of any mention of Chomsky's support for Khmer Rouge. (I used "Khymer", "KR", "Cambodia" and "Pol Pot" as search keys in each of the Talk page archives.)

The loyal supporters were forcing all criticism of Chomsky into a section of the main article called "Criticism" - then attacking the content there. At this point they have been able to delete that entire section. At one point there was an entirely separate article called "Noam Chomsky Criticism" but it appears to have been deleted along with almost any references to it.

The arguments are interesting in one way. The Chomsky brigade clearly use language as if meaning were infinitely flexible and as if the truth were mythical by nature and as if the ends justify the means - their arguments just a collection of grammatically correct black marks they cause to appear in the talk section. And by putting them there, they assume them to be "moral" and "rational" justification for deleting criticism. The opponents, who don't match the supporters in such a cavalier use of language end up losing the battle. One of the flaws of Wikipedia's structure.

Does the thesaurus entry for "sophistry" include "Chomsky" as a synonym?

Chomsky's initial statement is wrong. The purpose of the firm is to create long-term value for its financiers, e.g. holders of liabilities and equities supporting the firm. Maximizing profit and market share may or may not serve this purpose. Since firms have lifetimes just like their owners, and environments change over time in ways that affect the evolutionary needs of firms, the methods in which those firms serve their purpose must necessarily evolve.

A good contrast is BB&T versus Bank of America. The former has a vision to become "The Best of the Best" as measured by satisfaction surveys among clients and employees. The latter has a vision to become "The Biggest of the Big" as measured by market share. John Allison IV explained this at last summer's OCON 2011 talk "Independence and Teamwork" when discussing his role as CEO of BB&T.
