I posted this comment on YouTube:

I quickly scanned through the video to get the gist of your message. My main comment for now is that your video would benefit by moving beyond the "talking head" approach. A series of narrated PowerPoint slides or text overlays featuring bullet points would make the path from percepts to concepts smoother. I use a software package called AVS4YOU (Google it) for editing videos. I also use "Replay Video Capture" for recording narrated slides. Please consider these for future broadcasts.

Regarding the contrast between Stolyarov and Keer, I have to wonder how their live personae contrast against their Web ones. I imagine I would much prefer spending live time with the former than the latter. Stolyarov at least has the decency to act with civility and to show us his real face. Keer does neither.

Thanks for posting this, Ed.

As I recall, Stolyarov left RoR because of his views on abortion and this was one of the items that he listed as peripheral to Objectivism, whereas others consider it as central. I think, at the time, he was considering becoming a court reporter.

In my view he is outstanding in several areas. I think that when he first appeared on the scene he had a distinct Russian accent but he has practically no accent at all. He's a gentleman and he shows respect for his audience when he speaks on a serious subject by dressing and grooming impeccably. He always portrayed himself as somewhat formal and does so in the video but it's appropriate. He made a very good assessment of the Objectivist movement.

Luke:

I disagree that visual aids would have made his talk better. I enjoyed watching this talking head.

I wonder who the Objectivist was that encouraged him to make this exceptional video.

Sam

Given the choice of meeting Gennady or Ted face-to-face I'd choose Gennady every time. Ted acts as if being an asshole was cool, at least in his online persona.

I'll bet that if you met Ted Keer in person, he's be far less abrasive and insulting. When people get behind a computer screen with a keyboard as a weapon, they can often act in ways that they wouldn't dare act in person. People's online personae are often quite different from their real in-person behaviors.

I have often said that people act more civilly when within slapping distance of others.

That said, MSK's online persona matches his live one, so it does happen.

Bill,

When people get behind a computer screen with a keyboard as a weapon, they can often act in ways that they wouldn't dare act in person. People's online personae are often quite different from their real in-person behaviors.C
Case in point: When Joe Rowlands met me (at RoR Conference #1) , he said he was surprised, because he had expected me to be all serious and argumentative. Instead, I was giddy and warm and jovial and light-hearted and I couldn't get a smile off of my face. It felt almost sublime to be around people who share most of my really important values. Contrast that with how terrible and downright mean I can seem to be while engaging "ornary" folks online.

:-)
