Moscow CourtyardMoscow Courtyard
Vasily Polenov

A few years ago, I got a small 9x12 replica of this iconic Russian landscape as a present from my mother-in-law, who specifically commissioned an art student in Moscow to have it done. To this day, this small and badly framed oil painting is the only real thing in my house. It actually looks stunningly good from just a bit of distance. The online resource
http://www.russianpaintings.net/ says about Vassily Polenov and this piece, “in this serene picture he managed to unite spontaneity and frankness of plein air perception with Russian landscape tradition and intimate lyricism”.
