Alex Grey

In reviewing the artwork on this site, I was surprised not to see Alex Grey's work on here. Many may label it 'new age' or 'super natural' but after visiting his Temple of Sacred Mirrors in NYC, meeting him in person and hearing several talks he has given, I find his work utterly grounded in the greatness and potential of humankind. His work is also technically some of the best I've ever seen. The work is some of the most intricate and multi-dimensional I have ever seen. Like any good artist, even after multiple viewings I catch new aspects and nuances in his work and see them in a new light everytime I view the originals.

I recently saw him give a 60 minute talk on the history of art, artists and drug use which demonstrated a Ph.D level knowledge of art history and technique as well as being very level headed and impartial on the subject. While he openingly admits and is proud of the fact that his spiritual/therapeutic use of psychoactive substances has been a great source of inspiration to the subject of his works, he also went through quickly a good 20 artists that never touched drugs and made marvelous, brilliant art and was critical of artists such as Jackson Pollack in the role alcohol played in their work.
