There are a few non-fiction books that I have read which have bowled me over in the way that certain novels have. Such books include works like: Isabel Paterson - The God of the Machine Stuart Kaufman - The Origins of Order Ayn Rand - Introduction to Objectivist Epistemology Robert Graves - The White Goddess Julian Jaynes - The Origins of Consciousness Monty Roberts - The Man Who Listens to Horses Temple Grandin - Animals in Translation Oliver Sacks - Anthropologist from Mars Nietzsche - The Antichrist These books exhibit a fresh perspective and a synthetic breadth of startling proportions. They challenge received notions. Unfortunately, it is hard to find lists of such good books compiled by laymen - who recommend such masterpieces as the Celestine Prophecy- and critics - who think John Dewey is the height of profundity. I intend to write a review of some of the above titles. I would be interested in hearing from others on their favorite speculative non-fiction works. | ||||
