A Rational Egoist's Odds & Ends

A Rational Egoist
Hello All:

I don't posted here much for two reasons.

1. I don't consider it a major priority.
2. I purposely tune-out current affairs and thus cannot participate in many of the exchanges here at RoR. Instead, I attempt to focus on those things that are perennial- perhaps, you might say, I focus on the themes of the world. As a student of history with an incredibly long-term focus, that is the most effective way for me to understand what is really "going on."

A post explaining the reasons for not posting seems self-contradictory- it is always easier to illustrate a negative. So then let me now illustrate a positive. Here are several reasons I decided to type this message today.

1. I am sick and off work for the day.

and 2. I have an abundance of things I want to share...

a. Those here are familiar with "Nature to be commanded, must be obeyed." Well, I like to add to that part of that obedience is respect. My family has had a recent setback- I need not say more- and my knowledge of the external and largely uncontrollable aspect of some things in nature has been a source of support and renewal.

b. While convalescing yesterday I finished watching "Civilisation: A Personal View" by Kenneth Clark. If you subscribe to an online DVD rental program you are doing yourself a disservice in not putting this documentary series at the top of your list. I don't think I am spoiling anything when I say that viewing this program confirmed the fact to me that a civilized course for human history is the variable creative creation and destruction that awakens humans, us, to the facts of our existence.

c. My decision last year to rejoin my family's business was a deliberate choice. I always wanted to work there, and I did for 2.5 years. But I had too much personal fog surrounding me. I've worked hard and now the way is clear. With specific goals in mind, my family's business will thrive for years to come. And by the way, "It's A Wonderful Life" inspires my approach to business. Yes, businesses must look to an economic profit first. But, remember a business relationship is not merely money for goods, but value for value. Respect, integrity, loyalty, and many other values are attached with money in the most profitable exchanges within and without a business. My business success will be a be a slow, moral march.

e. My life has improved since I resolved in in November, December, and January to get up at 5 AM most mornings and write out my values and goals. Having taken my vitamins and with fruit and juice on my desk, I would write out in spiral notebook my values beginning with the statement "These are the values my actions are in accord with..." I proceed to write out in much more elegant phrasing then is done here the several things that are most important to me. My wife, son, and friends and family are #1. My self-esteem is #2. My sense of life and all that is possible to me is #3. My pride in my accomplishments is #4. My capacity to create unique values for myself and others through productive achievement and trade is #5. My fitness and total body health is #6. My rational conception of reality as the basis for my knowledge is #7. My civilized conduct in all my affairs is #8. My politicoeconomic security and freedom is #9 (I won't give an inch). And the scarcity of my time alive as a capable human being is #10.

I finish with this statement: "I consciously act at all times to further and maintain this values, never sacrificing one in the pursuit of another. And I act with complete conviction that they represent a concentration of the sum of values that best aligns with my overall objective of a joyous life." I proceed then to write out several goals (or 'value gain opportunities' as I call them): career, health, family, and life goals make up the list. For a little bit of transparency, going into space is one of my goals. I do this exercise only intermittently now, but as a result of doing it consistently for 2.5 months, I have deeply internalized my values and goals.

f. GetAbstract.com is a sound way to delegate your business reading.

g. Brian Tracy's "The Power of Clarity" program is quite good.

h. I recently became aware of Victor Frankl's logotherapy, I'm going to kick the tires.

That about does it. I am feeling considerably better now than I did 90 minutes ago when I started typing this message. I'm going to shower and go to work.

All the best,

Tyson Russell
