http://www.wjr.com/Article.asp?id=1447154&spid=6525 Michigan Congressman, John Dingell (D) had a hand in drafting the Health Care Reform House Bill. He defends the whole idea in this interview, and claims people who are upset about it are being irrational. He flatly denies that reducing costs will lead to rationing of care. He also says that the government will "only set standards" with regard to insurance companies, and this will not lead to government pushing private insurance companies out of business. (Those "standards" will include covering pre-existing conditions, among other profit eating rules.) He claims that government is far more competent at deciding which products should be offered to consumers. We can only infer that consumers themselves are just too irresponsible, ignorant, or greedy to do this themselves. Dingell claims outright that all insurance companies do is "skin people." He claims there is a "major problem" with insurance companies selling multiple policies to individuals, and gave exactly one example of this profit grubbing tactic practiced by a single profit chasing insurance company. Lots of regulation is the answer, he says. If you're happy with your health insurance company and policy, it's only because you're "lucky." The health care system in America is "broken and it has to be fixed," he claims. The cost of health care insurance is rising 17 times faster than wages, but Dingell gave no reason why that's the case. Dingell had all kinds of time to research why some poor idiot would purchase thirty some policies, uncovering all kinds of terrible things the profit chasers are doing, but research something actually relevant, like why the cost of health insurance is skyrocketing? Obviously that's too much to ask. He doesn't even appear to care. But the BEST part comes at the end: "Medicare is one of the most popular and successful programs [offered by government]. It's the cheapest way to collect money for health care. The cost of Medicare is about 1 percent. The cost of most private insurance is about 8 percent, in terms of overhead costs. Medicare is still doing fine. Every year it does better than the actuaries predicted..." "Social Security is the most successful entitlement program in the history of mankind! I haven't found anyone who doesn't like Social Security!" John Dingell is squarely living outside of reality, by choice, and needs to be held accountable. | ||||
