Assertiveness Training: Express Yourself with Confidence and TactObjectivists all too often allow themselves to become mired in arguments over who has the "right" position rather than simply asserting themselves and then acting by right.  Their mistake draws from the hidden assumption that one must necessarily seek "permission" from peers to engage in activities that have nothing to do with those peers.  This audio cassette program can help the listener to overcome that obstacle.

This recorded talk features author and speaker Helga Rhode, a professional instructor with the confidence, poise and appearance of a healthy Viking matriarch and the civility of Miss Manners.  She benevolently and rationally explains that the listener has the right to his own life and his own happiness and therefore the right to express himself authentically and civilly to his fellow human beings.  Although not philosophically rigorous, this program offers many helpful strategies an Objectivist can employ to manifest the virtue of self-assertiveness in daily dealings with others.  It buttresses some of the core principles Nathaniel Branden explains in his book The Six Pillars of Self-Esteem without making reference to his work.

This review refers to the audio cassette program to which I had the privilege of listening years ago via our workplace library.  I also had the privilege of viewing a video tape version of this program.  I recommend both if you can locate them.  Career Track had produced these items in 1990 but evidently no longer carries them.  Amazon does have a few used audio cassette programs in stock at affordable prices.
