Elfquest Archives Vol.1 by Wendy and Richard Pini
I'm not a big fan of fantasy as a rule but I make an exception for this excellent comic book series by Wendy and Richard Pini, this volume of which collects the earliest Elfquest issues. The Pini's were pioneers in the independent comic book publishing arena of the seventies. MIT grad Richard and artist Wendy met through the comic book letters pages of the time beginning their romance leading to their later collaborative creative and business efforts. Together they plot and write Elfquest, Wendy does solo on the art, lettering and colors, and Richard handles most of the business end of things. I gave an earlier collection of this work to one of my daughters when she was about sixteen telling her I thought she might enjoy it. She put it aside without much response. A couple of days later, she came to me asking if I had more of this. And I did. She quickly read the entire series. Comic fans tend to be predominantly male. It is a fact I know, having worked in the business myself. Elfquest is an exception to this, attracting an equal share of both male and female fans. This is work that is incredibly well crafted and also appeals to both young and old. The artwork is beautiful, the story telling first rate and the substance of the story, focusing on the characters as individuals, is wonderful. I highly recommend this entire series.
