| I saw some clips from this movie and it looked good. Then I saw it was directed by Lasse Hallström who directed the excellent Chocolat and I was sold. Unfortunately it was in and out of theaters locally in a heartbeat. After the first weekend, one local theater showed it only at midnight on Friday and Saturday night. Another showed it only at 10 a.m. on Sunday morning. I caught the last Sunday morning show on its third and final weekend and I was delighted that I did.
Casanova (Heath Ledger), that renowned lover and seducer of women, falls in love, himself, with a young woman (Sienna Miller) who despises Casanova, whom she knows only by reputation. Meanwhile, the high-ranking Catholic authorities want to put an end to Casanova's "sins." One in particular (Jeremy Irons) wants to see him hang and he will stop at nothing in his pursuit. This film involves not just Casanova's romantic pursuits but those of other members of the cast as well. Throw in several cases of false identities assumed as well as cases of mistaken identiy, some fighting, swordplay and chase scenes and you have a well done romantic comedy adventure that delights.
I highly recommend Casanova.
