Men of Honour
It's been a long time since I saw a movie which so inspired me, and helped give back knowledge of how great people can be. This is a simple story. It's not "art house" - deep and meaningful.  This movie is the true story of Carl Brashear (Cuba Gooding Jnr); not just the first colored man to "make it" as a deep sea search and rescue diver in the US Navy but a first in another shatteringly awe inspiring way.  Carl Brashear was the son of a broke share cropper in Kentucky - a man who who told his son when he left home to join the US Navy "I never want to see you back here again" and, most movingly "Never quit. When it gets hard - and it will - never ever quit. Always be the best."  What it takes Brashear to learn to live up to this standard, and the stunning way he does it, are the themes of this movie.  I grew up reading about WW2 heroes, believing that this is what life, and men, are all about. In the empty years since, I though that vision lost. This movie, and Carl Brashears' courageous life, give it all back
{This movie was enjoyed with - and much complimented by -
a Jacobs Creek Cabernet Reserve Sauvignon 2001 (2 Gold
1 Silver Medal), a Port Salut Cheese and a Pecorino with Peppercorn Grana cheese and water crackers}.
