Apparently, when this movie was first released it was boycotted by feminists for being too anti-women. How wrong they were, because if this film is anything then it is anti-men. Not all men though, just the macho type who would like servile house-wives.
This adaptation of the book by Ira Levin quite brilliantly takes the macho-dream of female servility to nightmarish extremes, showing that such women indeed lose their individuality. The very thing that most men (I hope) love about their wives in the first place.
This message can equally apply to all of mankind held in servitude, not just some women – i.e. the repression of individuality through servility.
I haven't seen the re-make of the film with Nicole Kidman released just this year, but I don't see how they could improve upon the original. I hope they didn't mess it up.
This is a horror movie based in reality that everyone can relate to that has an important message still valid today.
