Ayn Rand at the APA Posted by Fred Seddon on 1/12, 2:21am
AYN RAND AT THE APA This years meeting of the American Philosophical Association was held on Dec. 27-30 at the Hilton Hotel in New York City. The Ayn Rand Society met on Thursday afternoon and featured four speakers discussing various aspects of the topic, “Ayn Rand as Aristotelian.” Jim Lennox, my colleague at the Center for the Philosophy of Science at the University of Pittsburgh, started off the proceedings with a paper entitled, “Axioms and their Validation.” He was followed by Allan Gotthelf, also from Pitt, who spoke on “Concepts and Essences.” Fred Miller Jr. of Bowling Green talked about “Values and Happiness,” and the last speaker was Robert Mayhew of Seton Hall whose topic was “Literary Esthetics.” The overall thrust of the papers was that Rand was indeed an Aristotelian. The only opposition to this view was voiced by the Chair, world famous scholar of Aristotle, John Cooper from Princeton. (Gotthelf announced that he had indeed learn a lot about Aristotle from Cooper and his writings.) Cooper, in a brief set of remarks after the talks and before the Q & A, stated that he know precious little about Rand and when he did know he learned “this afternoon.” But after hearing all four papers he could only conclude that the authors were looking for Rand in Aristotle and he could not agree that they were successful. The crowd included many names from the current generation of Objectivists including but not limited to Tibor Machan, David Kelley, Harry Binswanger, Tara Smith, Michelle Kamhi. Sadly not present was the Brooklyn Radical, Chris Scriabarra. Fred
