Voltaire, Banned in France Posted by Ted Keer on 12/23, 7:45pm | ||
The satyrical play Fanaticisme, ou Mahomet, was written by Voltaire in 1741. Extant for over 250 years, performance of this play was banned by the French government in 2006 as hate speech at the urgings of the supposed moderate Tariq Ramadan. (The play had also been banned two and one half centuries ago, until Pope Benedict XIV praised it and urged its release.)
