| I remember watching this PBS special a few years ago. It was exceptionally good, and very moving. I teared up during several of the stories profiled in the show. Unfortunately, Gates found a way to use the science to further the divide between the "races," (which, in reality, doesn't even exist,) in subsequent "family tree" PBS specials . It appears to me that Gates deliberately mis-interprets his own results to add bias into his own history. Bias that the biology contradicts. I found a write up about the original DNA profile done on the show's host, Henry Louis Gates, Ph.D. The markers on his Y chromosome DNA are fully half European. And it can't all be explained by white masters taking advantage of female slaves, either. There's too many rare European markers, along with the fact that Gates' family heritage boasts "freemen of color" from the time of the Revolution. If you're able to watch the original African American Lives from 2006, I strongly recommend it. | ||
