Church plans Quran-burning event Posted by Luke Setzer on 9/09, 6:55am
From the article: In protest of what it calls a religion "of the devil," a nondenominational church in Gainesville, Florida, plans to host an "International Burn a Quran Day" on the ninth anniversary of the September 11, 2001, attacks. The Dove World Outreach Center says it is hosting the event to remember 9/11 victims and take a stand against Islam. With promotions on its website and Facebook page, it invites Christians to burn the Muslim holy book at the church from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. I only learned of this yesterday but evidently this has been planned for quite some time. On one hand, I support their legal right to do this and appreciate taking a stand against Islam. On the other hand, I consider it one form of evil attacking another. Overall, I view it as a waste of time and energy. I have to wonder what would be the outcry if an atheist group planned a Bible-burning event. I can still imagine death threats from self-styled Christians. But atheists generally find better things to do than this and Christians seldom resort to violence against their enemies. There is something ironic about a religious center whose mascot is the dove -- a symbol of peace -- engaging in such a provocative act.
