Abraham Lincoln's Indifference to Abolition

It is commonly believed that Abraham Lincoln was a benefactor of the slaves and fought the Civil War to free them. He did not. He fought the Civil War solely to preserve the Union. If saving the Union required preserving the institution of slavery, he would have done so. He stated as much in the following letter to Horace Greeley.
