Why It Matters that Life Begins at Birth, Not Conception Posted by William Dwyer on 11/06, 2:02pm
An excellent article in defense of abortion rights by Objectivists Diana Hsieh and Ari Armstrong. The article published August 31, 2010, addresses Amendment 62, on Colorado's 2010 ballot, which sought to legally establish personhood from the moment of conception, granting a fertilized egg (or zygote) full legal rights in the state's constitution. Fortunately, the amendment failed by a 3 to 1 margin. If it had passed, it would have had a profound and adverse impact on the lives of sexually-active couples, couples seeking children, pregnant women and their partners, doctors, and medical researchers. It would have subjected them to severe legal restrictions, police controls, and in many cases protracted court battles and criminal punishments. Perhaps, its failure was influenced by the arguments presented here, which are great intellectual ammunition against the so-called "pro-life" movement.
