The Importance of Environmentalism

The link will lead you to a blog article of mine about the topic.

In my opinion, environmentalism is a very interesting and necessarily important topic to the Objectivist canon. There is indeed no true contradiction between environmentalism and Objectivism/Libertarianism, instead we just never talked much to each other.
Of course, at the first glance, one could argue that environmentalism is closer to Socialism or Statism than Objectivism, but this is not entirely true. Many environmentalist ideas would be better solved by capitalist means than through the state. The socialist Eastern states have not been the most environmentally disasterous for nothing.
There are many good reasons for environmentalism as long as it is funded in reality, thus can be measured by science. However, the major task will be to filter junk-science from real science. For example, scare-science such as findings that point out a potential risk for cancer and therefore urge to forbid using a certain chemical, should not be considered true science. As we all learned in high school, cancer risk is not dependent on a does, but on a statistically determined percentage. However, it is very difficult to deal with statistics, because they are influenced by a number of outside factors that cannot all be included in a statistic. Therefore statistics are no scientific proof.

This is especially true in regard to global warming which is based on statistics and its interpretation. And here is the start of the problems that have forced environmentalism to be brought to restrictive government policies, because companies evaluated science the same way as any reasonable Objectivist and denied any rushed compliance with global warming alarmists.
Still, this should not distort our view on environmentalism on other topics that are still very important: The State of the Ocean (since till now capitalist ideas are only half-way transported on the Ocean (some lax farms are not the top of the ice-mountain)), General Pollution of Water and Air and subsequently our dealing with Pollution, The privatization of Wildlife Parks.
