SOLOists -

It's about a year & a half now since SOLO was set up. At that time I set very modest goals for it, saying it was just one small, radiant flower newly planted in the garden. In the time since, we have already held our first international conference (SOLOC 1), in New Zealand. We are about to hold our first "mini-SOLOC," in New York City. SOLOC 2 is scheduled for February or March, 2003, in New Zealand again. It's likely that all SOLOCs thereafter will be held outside NZ, probably in the States - while mini-SOLOCs, I hope, will sprout up all over the world when & where we least expect them! Audio & video tapes from these events will be a staple of the merchandise that will then be available.

The other major development has been the amalgamation of the original SOLO web site with the newest Rowlands/Landauer project, originally called ObjectivismHQ, into SOLOHQ.com This has been a stunning success, as anyone who visits the site on a daily basis can attest.

But we cannot rest on our laurels. As Joe likes to say, life is a process, not a state. We must think of SOLO similarly. We must keep "moving it." Part of the process is the vesting of authority in those who have earned it, so that they can get on with the business of moving SOLO forward & making the SOLO vision, as expressed in the Credo (SOLOHQ), more of a reality. To that end, we are creating leadership positions. We are adding a "Personnel" page where certain people's designations within SOLO will be specified. The idea of this is not to bestow high-falutin' titles on folk for them to jerk off over or become officious monsters in the exercising of, but to give deserving people a formal warrant to act & speak for SOLO &, simultaneously, to have what is in effect a "roll of honour" whereby the contributions people make to the spread of the SOLO vision are saluted.

New positions will be created as circumstances require. For starters, we are reiterating what is already known re the "prime mover," webmasters, Forum moderator, & SOLOists of distinction - in so doing, formalising the following categories: Founder/Principal (me), Executive Director (Joe) & "Stars." The minimum requirement for inclusion in the last category is the contribution of articles to SOLOHQ. Here, then, are our personnel as of now:

Now, I haven't consulted the Stars about their inclusion here, so if any object, for some reason, please let me know. Equally, if anyone NOT included feels he/she should be, please let me know that. The idea, btw, is not to divide folk up into "good boys & girls" & "bad," but to ensure that the active ones who help us SHOOT for the stars get the recognition that is their due. "Stars" may from time to time be given sub-designations. For instance, Joy Bushnell, Mrs LOL, might be titled, "Spokeswoman, Objectivist Housekeeping & Sex." And Kernon Gibes has already staked a claim for "Objectivist tea-making." :-)

The most important development here is the anointing of Joe as Executive Director. Though he will be answerable to me, he will have effective autonomy in "directing" SOLO activities, particularly in the United States. With his intelligence, his commitment to the SOLO vision, his restless eagerness to get things done - not forgetting his infectious chuckle - he will be a huge boon to SOLO in this capacity. It was he who first urged me to become more ambitious for SOLO than simple "small but radiant flower" status. We do indeed have something not on offer elsewhere, which we have shown in practice as well as in theory, & we should set our sights accordingly. My thinking behind "EXECUTIVE Director," incidentally, is not to sound pretentious or corporate but to allow for "Directors" who may be appointed, as we expand, to assist Joe.

Joe's appointment is also important in that it underscores that SOLO is NOT just a New Zealand group but a cosmopolitan, international organisation for Objectivists everywhere who eschew cultism on the one hand & bloodless ennui on the other.

Onward & upward. "The total passion for the total height."
