"My feelings on Solo as it currently is can be summed up by this picture."

You feel like... spinning around a dim sphere, which is near a light source, all of which is near a very dark sphere and some note shaped objects?

Note shaped? Look like break-offs from a swastika...

Dean, I wouldn't have stated it like that, but at least you got the note shapes right (They are NOT swastikas, Robert; if you're thinking Nazi's,well, that's on you.)
But if you look at the title, it's easy enough to see that they are notes.

This picture was originally a circle of people dancing around the world to the music (in the closeup you see the piper in the light). The light is the sun and the dark circle the moon.

The picture is part of a larger project inspired in part by SOLO. But as the project progressed, I found the SOLO spirit that inspired me diminish. And the circle of celebration split off as a result. The people are still going to the light, but split in a different path. Some are clear on their path, others are torn between friends. They are all aiming for the sun, but some are taking what the other side would consider a darker way. Who's on what side and what path is determined by the point of view. Black and white issues for many. I've been trying to promote the view that the Solo fights have been between good and good, not good and evil. (Recent "insult threads" are starting to change that view, however.) I just feel like something's been lost here, I've been hoping for reconciliations (long before the 25 years it took Pink Floyd.) While I understand why some left, I've been inspired by the spirit of those who have stayed in the hopes of something better to come. The cynic in me fights with the hopeful side of me. I may be naive to think things could go back to the way they used to be. It wasn't even that long a period. "But the light that burns twice as bright burns twice as fast," I suppose.

Still, no matter who's on what side (and is it even that simple?),I still hope we're all flying towards the same goal, following the same tune, shining on.

It was not meant as a slur, Joe - it is, after all, in exploding stage, a 'breaking free' mode as it were, into freedom... of expression or whatever you wished... yes, of course a 'musicalness' is involved - as you said, thru the theme/title... an honest mis-interpretation, especially as only 4 were there, and the bulbs of the notes not seen anywhere...

Joe,

Thanks for sharing your feelings, and abstracting it in art. I posted as I did because I couldn't find a meaning in it... but now I do, and I'm glad you posted it.

Might I suggest you put more work into it? Give the people more details, have them come alive. Study the way a bright light would play on objects like spheres and large note shaped objects, when viewing them from the rear.

Thanks, Dean, for the suggestion, but the piece will stand as it is, because viewed as part of the series, the details will fill themselves in. The other reason is that a major stylistic influence is Art Deco, and I simplified the series from more detailed to less, which is harder than it seems! Fantasia, Tron, Art Deco, comic books, Keith Haring, musical posters from the 20's-40's...that is the spirit of the style. As a stand alone piece, this may not be evident, so I understand your suggestion. (I leave the hyper realism to Newberry, another person missed around here.) It wasn't meant to stand alone, let alone be posted in the feeling that it was, but it took a life of its own and suggested itself in this manner.
Thanks, Jamie. The series is completed, and I will be making them available soon as a 2006 wall calender, prints, etc. Hope to have a site up soon, will keep you posted.

For what it matters I caught the meaning.  It's really good. Looking forward to the prints.

I really like this piece too.  I am glad you explained what it was about because when you said it was about Solo, I thought it was a picture of people getting kicked about, so I hesitated to say anything.  I do see the Haring influence in this one.  Big words scare me too, but don't tell Gary, he throws dictionaries.

I would like to see the entire collection and I claim first dibs on Serenade.   ;-)

Shine on,

Kat

Thanks, Kat. You do know, of course, that SERENADE was solely for you and Michael and not for the calender. :)

Joe,

Once again, thank you.

I am honored.

(We are.)

Edit - oops, I forgot. Nice piece. Why only Solo, though? How about the light and dark side in all of us? And the dancers, mere facets of ourselves. More universal that way...

Thank you, Michael. And you're welcome.

Yes, you are right, and it's no accident that the light and dark theme are in the piece, what with the Jungian influence and all. The funny thing is that I tried to minimize it and make this my "happy"project. But it took a life of its own. This piece will be in the middle of the year of the calender, most likely, with the final piece resulting in a union of opposites, alchemy if you will, and a happy ending. Of course, the non-SOLO customer will be able to appreciate it (hopefully) as a universal theme, I just posted it to Solo because of the direct influence of Solo on the piece. Hopefully, the last page will lead to art imitating life.

That is such a despairing line - Art does not, nor should it, "imitate" life... stylize it, re-present it perhaps [hopefully], but not 'imitate' it...

That and I just realized the saying was backwards in context... it should've said "Life imitates art."
