Jeremy, what was the context for this picture?
Do you mean what it ran in?

If that's what you mean, I remember that it ran in this little independent publication at my college campus.  I still have some stacks of stuff from college, and this was in it.  It was an article on the American philosophical downfall, and they had highlighted the ideas of Ayn Rand as a possible platform for a whole new approach to things.

I wish I could tell you more than that, but I clipped the article awhile back, and only the picture remains...

*LOL*  Will do.  Actually, I think one will probably have to be manufactured.

You know, I was in a bookstore that has all these "action figures" of literary characters, as well as stuffed dolls of other "famous thinkers", yet there was no Ayn Rand, although there was a Nietzsche(sp?) one and a Socrates and Aristotle one.

I think a good caption for this caricature would be:

"If you think you can pit your ideas against mine you've got another think coming."

Rand had the ability to dissect erroneous arguments like a coroner with a scalpel in the morgue, expertly determining the pathology and recording and explaining it in the terms of the professional and also in terms that the lay person could understand. The latter was her gift of fiction.

I don't like this drawing. It looks more like Betty Friedan's face, except she'd be holding two balls instead of one.

I remember back in the 70's a refrigeraor magnet of her, with $ as her eyes, and the caption underneath, saying - "I only have eyes for you".......

Ha ha!  She does look like she's throwing a football!

Or, about to knock down a 7-10 split...

Hi Jeremy,

I wasn't asking you if Rand liked bowling. I saw this in the caricature and made the quip. My posts take time to appear after I make them, so it came in after yours, although I had made it before.

Humor is in good part timing, so this one misfired.

Michael

Due to the "randroid" accusation, I didn't really enjoy this mock of jihad. If you would have said "our great philosophical inventor/founder/teacher" I wouldn't feel this way. I'm not sure exactly who you are trying to mock.

I mocked the real jihadists. There's no moral judgement in this cartoon, only a judgement by one cartoonist about how AR looked. I think we should smile at this caricature and use Objectivist Art criticism for more serious work.

There is something just a little sinister, in that the eyebrows are arched, but there is no hint of a smile. Perhaps as sinister as that bald Mike Myers character, mr Evil, or whatnot. But as a caricature, the work is excellent, since it is unmistakbly her. It is ever so much better that the GWB caricatures nowadays or the Reagan ones of yore that could not be recognized without gross exaggeration and context.

I think Mr Beelen's statement is one of the funniest things I've read on this site since I've been here. And I agree with Mike that there is a resemblance to Friedan. But Friedan wasn't so bad, and I'd have just said that it was Friedan who was copying Rand's style in any case.

"Go long," and "You've got another think coming" were also great.

Who owns the copyright on this image?

-an animal-loving plant-waterer.

Oh c'mon. The obvious caption for this caricature is "I can see you but you can't see me". It not only encapsulates Rand's philosophy but also her expression in the drawing, comical though the latter may be, and is meant to be. Couldn't help but post on this one.

I don't like it. I suspect that whoever drew this was not an admirer of Rand.
