What a wonderful idea! Friends of mine have often asked me to give them a SHORT introduction to Objectivism. I am usually stumped cause I don't know where to begin and how to compress it. Such booklets would be of tremendous help! If I were much more advanced in objectivist studies I would be tempted to write perhaps the Idiot's Guide myself. But as it is I wouldn't dare.

Hell yes.

I really like this! For those who recall in another discussion how I said Objectivism could be "preached" to the masses through media, this is some of the stuff I had in mind. These titles would do well, and would garner just as much attention from a reader at bookstore as would other titles. Yet how can this be done? Who can write these titles?

Also, you are right on the money about having basic books answer questions that non-objectivists have. This is would make the philosophy more accessible to a bigger potential audience. This is something our philosophy should do in a lot more in its discourse.

By the way, has The Logical Structure of Objectivism been published yet? I cannot find it. I only found it on the Objectivist Center website, in a Beta format.

I too have only had a look at the beta version of LSO. To my knowledge it has not been published yet.

Who can write these? I could if I had time.

Well, I'd say that what we need is a Reason FAQ that starts with the basics of reason and logic in a question and answer format.

Hi Barry!

I'm already writing these books! LOL!

Well, the shorter pieces on applying Objectivism to everyday life. *grin*

This has been my plan for about a year now and it wasn't nice of you to steal my thunder -- but at least I know there would be a demand for what I'm working on!!! LOL!

Great Article!!!

Not only is Barry correct about the practicality of such a project (or series of little projects)--I believe it is the only practical route to take. Objectivism is not hidden, by any means, but the number of Objectivist columnists and writers already out there isn't increasing by much, and most of them seem to be writing either op-eds only, or writing for the already-converted. Not much hope for growth there.

As for the Reason FAQ.....

My introduction to Objectivism came when a friend in algebra handed me Anthem. The "Teach Yourself" books cited reflect the demands of academic philosophy classes, rather than outlays by people seeking to improve their lives. I believe that this is largely true even of those who post here regularly. With the notable exception of Ed Thompson who dislikes fiction, we came to Objectivism via the novels.

Also, I deny that the problem is that Objectivism is too hard to understand. It is not. However, anyone who does not want to make some intellectual effort is not going to be deeply changed by a gloss. In fact, it would seem that the harder something is to understand, the more consequentially it is accepted by those who invest the mental labor.
