I'm willing. So teach me, how do I avoid becoming an Objectibot?
I think I've gathered what step 1 of the program is: don't use any term that is characteristically Objectivist. That will lead to accusations that you're just parroting Objectivism. Because clearly, you don't understand something if you happen to use the same word Ayn Rand used for the concept.

Step two is probably: Don't make any reference to any Objectivist material. And ESPECIALLY not anything Leonard Peikoff said or wrote. Don't even say the NAME Leonard Peikoff (whoops!). If you must refer to some source material, only use links to Solo Articles (the more praise and pointless banter you can heap on the better).

Step three I'm guessing: Don't reveal any philosophic hierarchy in your arguments, particularly if that hierarchy runs parallel to or makes reference to any of Ayn Rand's arguments. It's got to look like you did it all yourself, from scratch. Referring to someone else's thinking is second-handed (whoops! - I mean it's being an Objectibot Randroid copycat).

I think you've got a point there. I hadn't thought of that.

But then... you could... well... you know...

Bingo! That should do it.

Tom,
You asked in Post 39 how to avoid being a Objectibot. Assuming your question was curiosity about my take on the best, non-Objectibot characteristics of actual Objectivists, I'll submit the following:

Exercise your intellect at every opportunity to look at fresh approaches to old ideas (both Objectivist and not).

Don't be afraid to break new ground or examine new subjects

Check premises when necessary (even Objectivist ones)

Jason,

Thank you for providing a Jason's Finest on Solo list.

It is a very good selective list. I am using it myself for catch-up reading.

Very interesting to see what a fab SOLO newbie (relatively), Jason "Y'all" Dixon, sees as Quintessential SOLO, given that we're intent on putting out precisely such a publication at some point. By & large, Jason, I agree with your selections, though I have a couple of emphatic points of disagreement that I'll discuss with you at SOLOC 4. ("Discuss" is a process whereby you end up agreeing with Linz or dying a slow painful death, in case you didn't know.)

Linz,

I look forward to it.  There's a little bit of masochist in me.  ;-)

Jason

P.S.  By the way, that Ya'll comment didn't escape me, and you will be paying - in some unexpected and excruciating way - at SOLOC4.  (There's a little bit of sadist in me too.)

I'm looking forward to SOLO4 too, even though I'm not even going (and I'm not a sadist or a masochist.) I just can't wait for Jason to get home and give me all the gossip on meeting you folks in person. If I can't go myself, sending an extroverted gay man (who is as gossipy as me) seems the best way to get the scoop.

You really must stop letting the cat out of the bag my dear!  Now I'm gonna have to be even sneakier to get all the really good gossip!

By the way, I think the idea of a "best of solo" compilation, or something along those lines, would be a great thing to publish in bound form. The trick would be to make it marketable to the non-SOLO objectivist/libertarian world, since most SOLOites can get the content for free online, although a handy printed collection would be far superior.

Perhaps something like "Quintessential Objectivism" or some otherwise generally appealing title and theme...

This would be a great thing to discuss at SOLO C4.
