A nice remembrance, Tibor.

In case it interests anyone, in Ronald Reagan's collection of letters there is one that he wrote to Carson in 1980, thanking him and his wife for their "very generous contribution" to Reagan's campaign.

On the day after Johnny Carson died I happened to look at Yahoo, and noticed an interesting fact by accident.  Johnny Carson was number one in web searches--bumping Paris Hilton down to number two.  Well for one day anyway!

Johnny Carson was a major contributor to the James Randi Educational Foundation, so I'll forgive his lapse in sending money to Reagan.

At any rate, he will be missed by a lot of people.

Carson was, of course, a former magician like me (see my article "Errors of Modern Science: A Philosophical Magic Act"). On his show he once exposed spoon-bender Uri Geller for the charlatan he is.

James Randi, of course, has made a career of exposing supernaturalist frauds.

Robert,

I guess you made four posts for the four times Carson hosted Rand.

Has anyone seen these shows?  I have not seen them advertised for sale anywhere.

To avoid multiple postings, I have found that it is good to be patient, and to check one’s email or start another window to browse in, to kill time.

I can’t resist quoting one of my favorite oldies here:

Well, I found that jar, and I tell you, nothin’ was ever prettier to my eye

And I was tempted strong to drink it, ’cause that pump looked mighty dry!

But the note went on, “Have faith, my friend, there’s water down below.

You’ve got to give before you get—I’m the one who ought to know.”

So I poured in the jar and started pumpin’, and I heard a beautiful sound

Of water bubblin’ ’n’ splashin’ up out of that hole in the ground.

I took off my shoes and I drunk my fill of that cool refreshin’ treat.

I thanked the Lord, and I thanked the pump, and I thanked old Desert Pete.

—From The Kingston Trio’s “Desert Pete”

Sorry guys - don't know how to delete these extras, and when first posting - it drew a blank, nothing showing, so exited... guess, somehow, something tripped, and multiples popped all over....  but if it helped that one each stands for Rand being on Carson's show, so be it........

Thanks, Tibor, for this article. I always considered Carson to be head and shoulders above all the others of this genre. He was kind of America's boy-next-door, sometimes a little naughty but always goodwilled. In retrospect, I can see that he really had a great dignity about himself at all times.

I saw at least one of the Rand appearances on The Tonight Show with JC. This one was when she declared something like "I've never had an emotion I could not explain." Quite the trick, I thought, given that not a few emotions we harbor for a while get formed as early as in our infancy. It is good to run across such bloopers on the part of one's idol so as to avoid, well, idolatry.
