You done good with this today Peter. As Straight White Guy says :

This is a war of Civilization against Barbarity.. all civilized nations are targets... the scum who perpetrate such actions as this don't want political change.. they want a New World Order.. they want to bend you to their will or behead you...
Personally I think  for every Westerner killed we should execute an Islamic cleric. That might wake them up.

Peter,

You're right, it is business as usual.

Culturally the British abhore strong sentimentality (call it the curse of living on a crowded island), and it can take a playwright to capture the courage and pride of the people in a form that they will accept.

This royal throne of kings, this scepter'd isle,
This earth of majesty, this seat of Mars,
This other Eden, demi-paradise,
This fortress built by Nature for herself
Against infection and the hand of war,
This happy breed of men, this little world,
This precious stone set in the silver sea,
Which serves it in the office of a wall,
Or as a moat defensive to a house,
Against the envy of less happier lands,
This blessed plot, this earth, this realm, this England

People have mentioned the joy of winning the right to hold the Olympics in 2012, but I think it is more apt to remember that we very recently celebrated the 200 years since Nelson's victory at Trafalger. In 2005, as in 1805, it may be worth heeding Nelson's signal:

‘Engage the enemy more closely’.

Thank you, Peter.

Events like this wake one up from one's sleep. Here are the thoughts I posted on my own blog (campritchard.blogspot.com):

Long Live London!

There was something about London being attacked that struck me today. One is reminded of the Blitz, of course. No, it's not the same in scale but there surely is a similar principle at work.

Let's be clear about one thing -- as Red Ken (the mayor of London, Ken Livingstone) himself said: this was an attack not against prime ministers and presidents but against working class people, blacks and whites, Muslims and Christians, Jews and Hindus. People going about their daily lives.

There can be no more excuses. There are no possible reasons for attacking innocent people, many of whom were probably against the Iraq war.

This shows the reality of Islamist jihadism, pure and simple. It is indiscriminate and murderous and is not a campaign of the oppressed against the powerful. It is a campaign of the murderous against the innocent and, when the bombs in buses go off, against the powerless.

London is a modern, multicultural, tolerant and progressive city. Any attack upon it comes surely from the most reactionary faction of the darkest forces at work in the world. London is the city where Karl Marx studied, Oscar Wilde wrote and Churchill spoke. In the last hundred years it has been attacked by Hitler and, today, by the forces of Bin Ladenism. Let there be no excuses about the "causes" of such atrocities. The choice is clear. It's London or Bin Laden.

The terrorists, where ever they might come from, wouldn't give a beep. Just as beheading your local reverend wouldn't deter Christian terror groups from bombing abortion clinics, or performing random bombings in Northern Ireland.

2 billion Christians, 1 billion Muslims, 800 million Hindus, 325 million Buddhists, 20 million Sikhs, 14 million Jews...

Abrahamic religions such as Christianity, Judaism and Islam are all divided further. So just like christians are divided in many different sub-beliefs so are Muslims spread over many sects, schools, movements and faiths, and just as the small Cristian terror groups are despised by the great majority of christians, so are the small muslim terror groups despised by the great majority of muslims.

Fraser:
‘Engage the enemy more closely’.

I so agree, let focus be on the enemy, let's take down the terrorists, there can be no mercy for these monsters that are bombing innocent civilians. Let's engage the enemy more closely, let us forget about starting a holy war between 3 billion people and let us focus on stopping terrorism. It's not the west fighting the middle-east, it's east, west, north, south and anywhere in between fighting terror.

Yes, let's focus on the terrorist, which means hunting down terrorists instead of states.

this was an attack not against prime ministers and presidents but against working class people,
Not necessarily. You know, it is hard to hit Tony Blair today with all this police and army around the G-8 meeting. So, instead they lashed out against public places. It perhaps just shows the limits of this organisation.

Peter,

You write with a clarity that I admire greatly.  I was struck by:

The good guys' naivete on this point is their main strategic weakness: how do you fight enemies you can't even believe exist?"
I'm not sure these are the good guys, but this is surely the dilemma for most on the left.

The feeling of solidairty the world has for London is incredibly touching.

Obvioulsy, not just those living in England feel a love and respect for London, the city of cities. The financial capital of the world. Home to 10 million people.

Obvioulsy, we all can unite against the murderous activities of these disgusting terrorists too.

Thanks for a great article Peter.

These are "Dogs of Dogs" - that is the bottom line... and until the mullahs publically acknowledge that, and publically proclaim that, Islam will continue, as a collective, to have the guilt among them...whether they like it or not...

It is time to concentrate on the enemy and not the differing strategies of the allies. I feel my English blood even more so today. You should be proud of how you responded to these criminals. You have our complete support and total admiration.

Peter,

I'm going to make it a point to visit London one day. These terrorists should read up on the history of the English and maybe they'd think twice about this kind of provocation. Displaying one or two heads on the end of pikes would be a nice reminder. They think they've been in a war but so far it's just be sort of a holding action hoping they'll come to their senses. A false hope. They think they've won a great victory when it takes the coalition days or weeks and the loss of many soldiers to take part of a city. When if it weren't for the television cameras that city could easily be leveled in a few hours or less. What if all of the people watching those televisions back home WANT to see those cities leveled? They are fools to provoke like this. They don't have the slightest chance to win anything for themselves except the contempt and loathing of civilized people everywhere.

I'm very sorry about all of the dead and injured from the bombings. I'm very glad all of our solo friends are all right. The English are a very great people. Thank you for your article.

The London outrage has nothing to do with Iraq or any sense of British weakness on the 'war on terror'. These terrorists would kill anyone that was within their grasp that did not submit to their false god. Even the Saudi royal family hardly a westernising force in the middle east are on their list of targets. It was actually the inevitable consequence of two weapons of mass destruction unleashed on us by our own ruling classes during the past 50 years.

The first was mass immigration from the non-western third world - Enoch Powel 30 years ago warned in his 'rivers of blood' speech warned of the bloodshed which would follow in the wake of such a foolish policy. Not only have we Britons been forced to bear the burden of their crime, their poverty, and their hostility to British values but now the spectre of terrorism must be added to the list.

The second is the refusal to punish criminals, if these terrorists are caught they will not meet justice equal to their crime. They will not face the death penalty but 'understanding' and 'rehabilitation' in those revolving door hiltons we still foolishly call prisons, where only the innocent and the harmless need fear. No doubt their position as terrorists will give them special privileges as the IRA got and like the IRA the prospect of eventual release as a gesture of goodwill.

Peter,

Wonderful piece. Rand wrote about those who hate the good for being to good. Here they are in action. Let's get 'em.

This was originally written by David Gilmour of Pink Floyd about the death of John Lennon, but as I listened to it yesterday, I think it equally sums up my feelings on what happened in London and New York. These are the times where anger is certainly justified.

"Murder"

Some of them standing, some were waiting in line
As if there was something that they thought they might find
Taking some strength from the feelings that always were shared
And in the background, the eyes that just stared

What was it brought you out here in the dark
Was it your only way of making your mark
Did you get rid of all the voices in your head
Do you now miss them and the things that they said

On your own admission you raised up the knife
And you brought it down ending another man's life
When it was done you just threw down the blade
While the red blood spread wider like the anger you made

I don't want this anger burning in me
It's something from which it's so hard to be free
But none of the tears that we cry in sorrow or rage
Can make any difference, or turn back the page

Malarki's bigotry makes me sick - especially on this particular thread.

Malarki, you're not a libertarian, or an objectivist, and you have no sense of life. You're a racist cunt.

Imagine quoting Enoch Powell on this site.

Fuck off. Die soon and make us all happier.

Peter, I could not comment on this before today, so enraged was I by the brutality against that wonderful city and her people. Thank you for writing this.

I second John Newnham's sentiment. The rage is passing and now it is time to concentrate on finding and harshly punishing the terrorists. May our troops and leaders do their job well!

Fraser, why don't we take Malarki at its word, starting with the moniker it decided to use? Don't bother reading that crap.

I can't take anyone with a name like that seriously anyway. Remember something weird and offensive called Rooster Puke from before? It was a riot reading through old threads and seeing posters writing, "Well, Puke, have you thought of..."

LOLOL...

I could never ever do that without cracking up. Just as I cannot talk to something called Malarki with a straight face. That poor thing is just a light-weight nobody trying to get attention anyway, so whatever-it-is is not even worth your time off from a good beer.
