Bravo, Derek. Thank you.

I had been away five days in Dunedin and had been thinking how I would respond to a post saying Linz was not the prime mover I was saying he is. Now, with your explanation of what he has done for liberty in NZ, I no longer feel I have to. And, of course, with your experince you've said it far better than I could have.

Thanks again.

Great article Derek.

I am glad Linz has a friend as wonderful as you.

I think you are right that he is "shy" - however he needn't be shy of praise when he can get it ;-)

Thanks

This item isn't as fun without the 'beanpole' snaps that go with it in TFR.

Derek,  that was a wonderful tribute to a truly remarkable man. He is very lucky to have a friend like you.

"That man dares to say what the rest of us secretly believe!"    Well not so secretly here at SOLO.    ;-)

I really miss Linz.  A lot.

Kat

What an excellent description!  I've been hearing about this guy for years, but never had the opportunity to meet him or even to read any of his thoughts until now.
Thanks so much for providing a little more substance to this man.

"But then I thought about it again and it struck me: what this poster was really objecting to was not the notion of groveling followers, but the idea that someone might strongly admire Linz. "

Derek, this is not true. I said in that post that that what I was not against the idea of strongly admiring Linz, but being a grovelling follower. However, since it sets your article up nicely, I can see why you would change my motives, so please...shine on.

What a wonderful tribute to a great man, Derek.

I am so glad to see an article focusing on the most important part of Linz for newcomers - his achievements.

I'm also glad you focused on his sincerity, which is always the first trait detractors forget (pretend that does not exist, maybe) when they bash him.

I stand by Linz. I have stood by him at troubled times and I intend to continue to do so. His is a marvelous life.

btw - Your writing in itself was quite, quite good in this article.

Michael

A lot of the people on this site may not be aware of all that Linz has achieved in New Zealand in broadcasting (TV and radio), politics (founded political party), music (Lanza) and more.

So it is great for people like you who have known him so long to provide that sense of perspective.

Thanks Derek!

Many thanks to all who wrote such kind things about my essay. I'm intrigued, though, by the ratio of sanctions to posts :-)

Joe: It wasn't my intention to distort your original comments. But I'm glad you've made it clear now that you're "not against the idea of [folk here] strongly admiring Linz." For damn it, the man is a living treasure - and I couldn't care less how much "credibility" I've now lost in certain circles for expressing that view.

Roll on August the 14th!

I generally try not to post anything that just says "agree." So initially I sanctioned without a post. Since you've noted the strange sanction-to-post ratio, though, I'll go ahead and note my agreement.

Back in the day, Linz and I were continually at odds and could never just agree to disagree about anything.  Despite the accounts here of his good deeds and such, I remember him as unbearingly haughty (much more than typical arrogance), and one of the main reasons I stopped posting here for so long was because I had grown tired of having the same arguments about the same topics in every discussion, no matter what the original topic was.  Regardless of what I said on any matter, I felt like Linz was quick to dismiss my stance based (ridiculously) on the fact I liked music he didn't care for.  Curing cancer wouldn't make a jerk not a jerk.  I'm not at all saying I have a problem with all you guys praising Linz.. you have your experiences with him, and I have mine.  It is what it is.  :)

But before you all think I'm just blasting Linz with hate, the real reason I'm posting is to say I kind of miss his presence on the forums.  When I came back recently, I missed the fiery tension and controversy.  This forum without Linz (for me) is kind of like trying to watch a superhero film without a villain... everyone's able to agreeably disagree on topics, discussions are civilized, no one is really starting fires.  When I used to post here (on SoloHQ, rather), it was always very interesting to see what would unfold with people like Linz and Reggie, and some others.  This forum is so much more sensitive now, which can be nice, but sometimes I miss logging on in a flak jacket.  :)

The best compliment I can pay to Linz is that despite our personal distaste for each other, I can't deny that he fueled a lot of the good discussions I recall.  When you thought a topic might be dead, the next day there would be a post from Linz, poking a finger in a bruise or taking a cheese grater to someone's sunburn.  A lot of those threads would've been much shorter-lived without him, so for that, I tip my hat to good ol' Linz.
