I like the idea behind this new site. After having seen the old site lose its focus in all the personal conflicts, I just got bored. Perhaps with this new begining for Joe and Linz, we may see the return of those whom have long left us provided there is good will on all sides. Here's looking to a great future for both sites. Also check out the Gilded Fork, the new incarnation of Gastronomic Meditations.

As to Luke's post, on solopassion.com there is the old SoloHQ site which reflects the site as it was when it officially closed.

Luke - you ask, "For future reference, is there a way to edit the hyperlinks in such a way that a root URL change will not affect the linked and displayed picture as long as the subdirectory and file names remain unchanged?"

I provide links to resources (pictures etc.) that reside in a web directory (on another site) that is under my control.

I know the pictures transferred here with all the other content.  The problem is that I cannot edit the articles as they are more than one day old.  Perhaps Dean or Joe or Jeff can do a global "search and replace" on all the URLs here that point to the old http://www.solohq.com root URL and replace them with the new http://www.rebirthofreason.com root URL.

Great, new site…now I say it’s time for a revolution up in this bitch!  If this site is supposed to take us in a new direction and focus on activism I say down with the old and up with the new.  First, don’t keep this site as a clone of SOLO, tear it down, archive the old forums and completely redesign the site.  I think we should switch to one of the php forums, they’re simpler and very easy to use.  Next, (don’t cringe) we should wipe the user accounts, hell half the people listed as ‘members’ don’t post anymore.  We also don’t know how serious the people who do are about this new site.  Let’s just start from scratch.

Finally, again to make activism at the forefront of this site, make it so that when you first come to the ROR page you’ll see what’s going on now or what’s being planned.  I don’t want to see some stupid movie review when I go to the homepage.

Speak for yourself Clarence! ;)  I love the site.  I said it before and I'll say it again, it is a tremendous achievement.  I'm glad to see that it got a face-lift but remained structurally sound.  It's good to see everyones face again.  Hopefully this site can shake off some of the accumulated baggage and under Joe's guidance move forward and strengthen objectivism.

Thanks to everyone for the comments, and I'm glad to see so many familiar faces.

Tenya, I share your enthusiasm, and I'm happy to see you express it so well. I think we can do great things, and I'm glad you're on board.

Marvin, thank you as well.

Ross, thanks for the comments. And of course, Paine really knew how to make a passionate, memorable statement.

Mike, glad you like the new look. I don't really have anything in mind for the name of people here. Born again Objectivists is too funny!

Adam, I intend to write more on my conception of activism. For now, I see a countless number of ways of advancing Objectivism. It may be extending or refining the philosophy. It may be training new intellectuals. It may be making it all clearer and easier to practice. It may be building webpages, writing pamphlets and books, or creating other resources (such as this site) to help people make the transition to Objectivist ideas easier. Your own lecturing counts. Starting local clubs is another.

Let me give you just a few examples. Ed Younkins writes articles comparing, contrasting, and drawing parallels between Objectivism and other systems of thought (as well as just doing an objective analysis of the other systems). His articles are a real resource.

Dean Michael Gores is a brilliant web programmer, and volunteered to help out on this site. His work on the new RoR Mail program is just fantastic. And he contributed so much getting this new site up and running. I think he only got a couple hours of sleep last night, staying up working out the last of the details.

Katdaddy cleaned up the Romance page, added photo galleries so people could share their successes with others, has advertised for it, and even started a personals section where people can better find romance. She's also written on other lists about her positive experiences on SoloHQ, and has helped Luke on some of the local club stuff.

I could go on and on. Tibor with his articles. Julian Pistorius and Duncan Bayne for their various activist actions. Julia Brent for stepping up as Director of Operations and working on all the stuff that drives me nuts. The 176 different authors who have contributed here. I can't do justice to everyone.

Each of these people decided to try to improve their world by going out and doing something about it. Activism can take an unlimited number of forms and methods, but the important part is getting up and doing something! We've always had a good number of real activists, but they occasionally get drowned out by the "talkers". I intend to keep the activists in the spotlight on this site.

Ed Hudgins, thanks for being here at the kick off to the new site. You TOC guys are welcome here, and I think we're going to have a much more cordial relationship in the future.

Chris Sciabarra, thanks for the warm wishes. Despite our occasional difference of opinion, you have my utmost respect as an activist. You put some much effort and professionalism into you work.

Luke, thanks for staying on board as the Club Coordinator! We have big plans in the works!

Ed Younkins, I'm very glad to have your participation.

MH, you're back! Good to see you. We don't have plans to remove any of the articles or posts at this point. I may remove some of the more offensive ones at some point, but those wouldn't include yours.

Ethan, thanks. I'm glad to see you here. You stand up for what you believe in, and you're a good friend and ally.

Joe Maurone, great to see you. You're an excellent example of the spirit of activism. Your "Selling Freedom: The Choice of a New Generation?" was an excellent look at the how to approach activism. And your work starting and leading the music forum has been excellent.

I realize the name is not that catchy, although I think it's pretty descriptive. But this is just the start. This website is just one of the many projects we're going to tackle, and shouldn't be viewed as the whole or even the most important. More details soon!

Roger, we actually talked about having some conferences, which might be called RoR conferences, or RoRCs.

Ciro, thanks for the compliments. I also appreciate your activist spirit in taking over the Food leader position and donig such an outstanding job.

Luke again! When a page is edited, you can always (in HTML) type src="/img/whatever.jpg" instead of "http://rebirthofreason.com/img/whatever.jpg". Then it doesn't matter if the domain changes. I'll set things up so you can make modifications, and maybe Dean will have some ideas of doing it all in a more consistent manner.

Matthew Graybosch, thanks for the compliment. Glad to see you participating again recently.

Adam Buker, I hope the new site stays more to your liking.

MSK, thanks for the nice wishes. Let me dispel any rumors that you had anything to do with the shutting down of SoloHQ. While we have plenty of disagreements between us, you don't deserve that kind of blame.

Clarence, I can see where you're coming from. I thought about doing the big reset of members and posts. It would have been a lot of trouble, and I wanted to make it easier to participate here. As for redesigning the site...what?!?!?! You know how long it took to make this?

In reality, the features on this site are useful, even the movie reviews. Part of changing the world is to be able to emphasize our values, and share them amongst each other.

But I understand the spirit of your request. Let me restate that this is just the beginning, and this is not the extent of the activism. I've got much bigger and bolder ideas, but the first step is cleaning a little house and trying to make this site compatible with the rest of our plans. I'd be happy to discuss ideas you have on activism privately (or publicly).

Jody, I'm glad you love the site. Jeff and I spent ages working on it, improving it, planning it, and of course programming it. It's a powerful tool, and we're going to utilize it.

Tim Sturm! We gotta get you a new picture! Glad to see you you, and thanks for your well-wishes.

I wish Joseph Rowlands and Rebirth of Reason the very best in their new endeavors. I think this has the potential to be a truly formidable organization. Every other Objectivist group better look out!

In my view, SOLO has amicably split into two, and each separate part might easily become more impressive than its parent. Competition can often be terrific for all. I hope everyone chips in to make this organization truly great!

Joe,

This is great.  To think that this is just the beginning, that so much more is possible,  is wonderfully exciting.  I look forward to taking part in the upcoming opportunities and projects.

Dean,

Just want to let you know that your hours of lost sleep was well worth it.  I can just imagine the maddening amount of details you and Joe took care of to transition a web site of this size and complexity.  I especially like the emerging earth in the title "Rebirth of Reason".  We are looking to the rise of the earth on the new horizon.  What can be better than that?!

JJ

Joe you said:

That is without a doubt the best compliment I've received in a long time. Thank you and thanks for the new site. Activism is something I'm very keen on, so I think this will continue to be my favorite place to post. Looking forward to the positive future!!!!

Ethan

I'm finally getting used to the blue. JJ, your smile and the blue border look magnificent together. Thanks for the compliment. I like the earth in the title too.

I worked to changed "Solo" to "RoR". Find an instance of "Solo" that should be changed to "RoR", earn 4 Atlas Points! ;)

The site feels weird. Very calm, a little sad, torn. Never-the-less, I look forward to the future. I expect to see some old faces once again. I'm excited to meet new ones that come in too.

There are a few things I would like to know: Joe, what is the moderation policy? What kind of articles will be accepted? Who is the editor? Is there going to be a conference this year, so that I can shake your hand?

While the editor position is vacant and article queue is low, does anyone have a favorite + life changing/inspiring article that they would like to see up on the front page again?

Dean-Good job with all your hard work.  I wanted to say that before I asked for any favors!!  How hard would it be to let us control the upload and changing of our own pictures?  I'm sure this would take some off of your shoulders as well.

I'm not sure what the qualifications for an editor would be, but I would love to help out if possible.  I've studied effective writing and my wife Lydia teaches writing at a couple of local colleges.  We would both be more than glad to pitch in.

Jody, I was thinking the same thing (about the images). I've got an auto-image formatter working on my own computer, but it'le take some work to get it going on RoR. I could look into integrating it into the profile page this weekend.

I just recently purchased a Kodak EasyShare V550 (a very small sexy 5.0Mpixel camera), which I'd like to put into use. My mug shot on the left there is almost three years old!

Andre, thanks for the comments. I'm not quite sure what a formidable organization means, but I hope to at least have a productive one.

JJ, thanks for your support with the new organization.  And I agree with the emerging earth...it was a nice addition to the site.  Thanks Dean!

Ethan, you've more than earned that compliment.  I'll be happy to have your help on some of the projects we've got planned.

Michael, glad to see you drop by for the warm wishes.  I'm sure our paths will cross.

Bill, thank you for the kind words.  You're definitely welcome.  Glad to see you here.

Joe Rowlands, I wish you much success with this new, more independent effort. I'm looking forward to Rebirth of Reason's future.

Joe Maurone, I love the Superman-Red/Superman-Blue analogy. I much prefer the original 60's "imaginary story" to the 90's version.
