    Indeed, the whole question should now be RE-phrased as...

       "Which came first: the 'mutant' chicken, or, the 'mutant' egg?"

Oh pleeeeeeeze - the first chicken came from an egg - so the egg had to be the first manifestation of mutancy, from which came the chicken.......
