The love story between Lawrence Garfield and Kate Sullivan provides contrast. As delivered in the movie, Larry's having won the battle but lost the girl is sad. The film wobbles on the brink of maudlin altruism - what profit it a man to gain the world and lose his soul? But it works out as it should, for they are two of a kind and Garfield is the hero.
