| | Professor Machan,
One of the most off-putting things I encounter with most progressives is an entirely different style of 'thinking' and using their words. They seem to hold many ideas on a kind of faith originating from an early, peer-induced, emotional inspiration - a sense that being cool trumps being right... or perhaps, being cool and in-tune with the cool peers IS being right. Certainly, their concept of 'being right' doesn't resemble mine. Instead of logic in pursuit of understanding, it is propaganda in service to increasing political control.
When Obama speaks of Rand, I'd interpret his statement as picking words that demean or ridicule anything that counters his ideas, and they are chosen to further an agenda - which is the secret proselytizing for progressivism or to cheer-lead for Obama. Take a look at any of his speeches or interviews and note how often you could circle a paragraph and label it by it's intention or function: To deny, deflect, distract, attack, ridicule, intimidate, lie, or to trumpet an almost holy reverence for some progressive facade (social justice, green pursuits, diversity, etc.) as an emotional bonding of the followers.
